my attempt to build a Follow Focus

Yeah, the aquatica gears are quite thick. They allow for a fair amount of travel since they're about 1/4 inch thick. About the size of half a DVD case. (My measuring tape is in the car with tnow and it's snowing, so don't expect me to measure until later. )

Having built a FF from scratch (I even created the gearing mechanism at a 90 degree within a small box, egad), I found that although the DIY is fun, educational and a great experience - the amount of time and effort might be better spent buying a decent commercial FF and filming with it.

hey Puck...

hey Puck...

Are you sure that BH gear you ordered - part #18663 as per the link a few posts earlier is 0.8mod cinepitch

look at this photo

The 32pitch 80T gear is the cinepitch driver gear from Indifocus. The other gear is the Aquatica from B&H (I bought 4 of this in my excited rush to grab them before anyone else does - apparently they only have a few left).

Thing is they don't match. I'm inclined to think it's because the Aquatica is not actually 0.8mod 32 pitch...(according to Tim from Indifocus it's 1.0) - which is fine because his stock driver is 1.0 in anycase - but I just thought people should know.

also...does anyone happen to know what size set screws these aquatica lens gears use - I may need some slightly longer ones for my small lenses (28mm and 50mm series E Nikons)

hmm. i have the indifocus and it meshes directly with these gears perfectly.i'll try to make sure it's the correct product number. i'd hate to be misinforming anyone.

That picture just makes me sad. Reminds me of the endless search for a grain free static adapter...

spoke to tim from indifocus

spoke to tim from indifocus

he had one of those 18663's in his hand.

He said they are 1.0mod

in other words - the stock indifocus drive gear meshes perfectly with it.
the 0.8 cinepitch drive gear does not.

;)

so there's our answer I guess.
(I had sent the 1.0 back to him thinking I would never use...so now he's sending it back)

btw I have suggested some improvements on his follow focus (mainly how the pieces - both drive gears and the focussing knob - attach to the shafts - in order to eliminate wobble) - he has wholeheartedly embraced them so you should see some very cool improvements.

He's a very very nice guy - and extremely customer friendly.
