My Apple SuperDrive is Dead

I think the super drive (CD and DVD burner) in my G5 is dead and I need a replacement.

Do I need to buy this from Apple and if not, where can I get them and how do I know if it is compatible with my Mac?

I know in the back of most Mac mags they have advertisements to replace Superdrives.

I've been thinking of getting mine replaced with a dual sided superdrive.

I'm not sure if they sell them outright to replace then on your own though.

Don't get it from apple as they always price their stuff high. Go into System Profiler and find the exact model number in your tower under Hardware>Disc Burning. The Model number should be at the top. It's probably a pioneer. Google that model number and start shopping, or enter it on e-bay. You should find a better deal.

Check out Fastmac.com

They should have replacement superdrives

However they also have blueray drives... which might be worth the investment depending on your workflow needs

you dont need to get from apple. the Super Drives are pioneer drives, get em from frys nice and cheap

Thanks for all the links.

I found exactly what I needed at OWC: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Pioneer/DVR112DBK/

Hi Chris,

The superdrive on my g5 was on it's way out. I ordered this same drive (DVR112DBK) from OWC and installed it last week. It works great and was an easy install.

Be sure to download the link they supply to PatchBurn (version based on your OS).

I've since burned several DVD's and I'm back in business.
