Look out dude! That car totally explodes!

that was great
you should send a tutorial on how to do that. or a link. Was it just AE or did you use some trapcode particle effects as well.

dude, i gotta give you props for knowing how to do that because i def. can't but if i'm gonna keep it real....it looks fake.

i think the explosion looks too sharp and digital while the rest of the image is soft like film. also, it was obvious that the last half was a freeze frame with animated flames/smoke on top. the trees quit blowing in the wind.

it looks pretty cool for what it is but if i saw it in a movie, i would think it looks fake.

its a moving car so the effect should still have some of that momentum in it for realism. Nice job, I could only dream of pulling off something like that.

Yeah, I know it's not completely realistic... it's a non-paying job for a TV pilot that won't ever make it to air, so I think this might be about as good as it gets.

The background actually isn't a still, it's a motion plate, so there's should be a little motion in there if you look carefully. But that is the main thing that's been bugging me: there's this huge explosion and the trees don't really react. The branches should be blown all over the place. But man is that a pain in the ass to do... unless someone knows a really quick way. I tried doing it with distortion meshes and it was gonna take forever to get the results I wanted.

Anyway, thanks for the compliments and for the real critiques.

To get the trees to move, you could go back out to the shoot location on a windy day and do the same lockdown shot over again, then you'd have a plate layer to mess with, and maybe you could make it work. If I were doing it for a paying job, I would have kept the same lockdown shot, and fired up the tres with a couple of big rental hog fans. Then you could have made the trees blow directly upwards.

True, that's an ideal way to do it. But this was a spec show with a TOTAL budget of well below $10,000. I think my whole lighting budget was around $500, just to give you an idea.

billybob, Ian's right: I'm sure you can't view because it's h.264 compressed. You need Quicktime 7 for that.

It DID look fake. The explosion itself looked fake to me. The flames in the explosion cloud just sort of evaporated. I didn't even notice the trees and I think most viewers' eyes are drawn to the car itself. BUT, I think your ability to do this without CG and all that other Hollywood stuff speaks highly of your editing abilities. Cool dude.
