GH4 My 'All I' setting experience so far

After initially testing all movie "format" settings on the GH4 I'm reaching the conclusion that All i is the worst by a long shot. Not sure why but it is mush next to all other options. Tripod and detailed subject was used. Three tests were conducted because I was so surprised at how poor all I is. No subject movement, so that's my next step, to set up a constant and repeatable moving target i.e the ocean, to see how the All I might redeem itself, but to be honest I'm not holding my breath. The 4K is beautiful and at this point I would only consider shooting 4K and downsizing in post if need be. The in camera difference is too vast and post will/might allow a certain degree of quality control options. How have you guys fared with all of this?

From the brief tests I've seen online, I thought Moon Trial 7 on the GH2 looked better than the 200 Mb/s I-frame on the GH4. Only the 4K downsampled could match or exceed Moon T7's stunning image. Which goes to show that bitrate is only part of the story. Nick works his magic with the rest of those settings as well, and it works. Panasonic should hire him to tweak the settings for the official firmware.

I shot more HD tests yesterday - downtown vistas and the All-I failed every time. In fact what brought my attention to it was when I was first testing my FF lenses on the S/booster,
I had the camera set at All-I believing it would be my go to HD setting. The image detail looked like ass and I thought it was my lens S/Booster combo.
4K eased my mind. So did 50mb/s for that matter. I'm not sure why Pannie even bothered with the All-I, or maybe someone can show me the error of my ways???

I'll also downsize the 100mb/s 4K in post and compare it to the HD 50mb/s camera file, and see how that fares for an HD finish.

This is when Atomos really makes a lot of sense.

GH3 "All-I" was a terrible mess too. Looks like it hasn't changed much.

Thanks for performing these tests Stuart.

Yep, ALL-I gives a tiny bit better motion in some situations for me, but for detail, IPB is way better. It makes sense though. When you compress the data between several frames with a solid codec (like h.264) you're saving a lot of data rate for the important detail. With an all-I codec, you're treating everything in the frame as equally important, more or less.
