My AF100's image quality has suddenly dropped

I just got my af100 a day ago and have a Kipon adaptor and I see a TON of red noise in the blacks, at every ISO. At first I thought it was just the LCD screen and then I did a live feed via HDMI to my 50" HD tv and it was even worse than I thought.

I think you need to dial in a setting that is known to be good before really commenting on quality. Abelcine have some good ones to get you going. Most cameras whoever the manufacturer are crap out of the box.

I set-up the scene files right after I did a quick looksie for least amount of noise. No DRS, tried every gamma, coring, kneeing, etc.

Low. I thought maybe the ISO at default (something like 320) was too high so I toned that down too. Still got noise. I thought it may have been my TV but it handles other blacks from movies perfectly.

So I would say that says no to a light leak then :)
I guess so :-/. I have had the Kipon since I purchased the camera and never had any problems with it or the image quality so I am thinking that, unless something has happened with the adapter since then, that it isn't related. I called panasonic's LA office and left a message. Does anyone know of I am able to just walk in with the camera and ask for help, or do I need to make some sort of appointment? The sooner o can get this figured out, the better.

Can you tell us what your scene file settings are is set to? Have you done black balance?

I took some more screenshots from a test I literally just performed. THe first show shows how the issues doesn't reveal itself in the normal colors, or colors of the lighters spectrum. Everything after that shows how it is an issue that is very prominent in the darks and shadows. Every shot is correctly exposed. Some of them are out of focus in order to show the issue in the still frame, as it would be very hard to see if it were one single frame in focus.

What I find interesting is that most of the noise I have ever seen on my camera doesn't have a chromatic element to it, it's like shades of the same color it is on. But yours, I clearly see color, similar to what I would see on my 7D. Very very odd.

Yea, it's very strange. I need to know if I can walk into the LA office with the camera at any given time, or if I need to make an appointment. I called but haven't gotten any response from the repair center.

Is it correct to expect little to no noise at a low ISO and b.press gamma with all the settings set for low noise? After reviewing my footage it looks almost the same as pjm's, sometimes worse.

keep us posted on what the outcome is PJM....hope you get it figured out soon. just got mine last week and haven't done enough tests to see if mine does the same thing and seems i've been too busty to "play" with it recently.... although i have an adaptamax for adapter not the one you have.

anybody have any screenshots of how clean and crisp the blacks are supposed to look with this camera? be interesting to compare to PJM's.

I wish I was too busty....

I kid, I kid!

Seriously though, I was under the impression that the AF100 did quite well with black levels, but perhaps a bit challenged dealing with highlights.

hahahahaha...my bad...i've been too "busy" not "busty"...

to your comment jdv - that's my impression too, hoping its just a glitch with his cam.

I called the Panasonic Service Department and they are supposed to call me back today, as the tech's were not in the office yesterday. I will let everyone know what their diagnosis when I find out.

It does do well with the black levels, thats why i'm so concerned with the image I am getting.

After reading about a couple of similar issues with suddenly appearing splotches I need to ask. Do you shut down your camera when you change lenses? I usually do, but twice I was working fast, and being a film guy, forgot. Luckily it was a murky overcast day, but I wonder - what would happen if hot light source struck the sensor?

No, I don't shut down the camera, as there is nothing electrical connecting between my lens and the camera at this time anyways. I've been doing this since I received my camera and never had an issue ever.

What I can say is that I see what the sensor sees on the monitor while I change lenses. Since I am using fast lenses or ND anyways most of the time, it never overexposes so I don't see a problem.

Okay, I got a return confirmation number, but I do have a question for anyone dealing with the Panasonic Service Department in LA, or any of the service departments in general. Since I live literally 10 miles from the building, do I need to ship it in or am I able to drop it off? I can't seem to find the answer to that ANYWHERE. Would like to know ASAP so I can get the camera to them and have them fix everything :)
