FAQ My A7Rii woes with Speed Booster

Hi guys,

I'm having some strange problems with Speed Booster (Canon E lenses) on the A7Rii. But first, let me quote what instructions I got from Metabones Support:

"1, adapter must be in Advanced mode. (In Green mode, the much touted PDAF is unavailable for video, but video AF would revert to slow contrast detection AF.)

2, lens set to AF but camera set to MF (because the only other setting allowed in movie mode is AF-C, which would generate the continuous train of tick noises you have seen with FS7, which you would rather not have.)

3, configure the AF/MF Button under the "Custom Key Settings" menu item, or any other button which fits with your ergonomic requirements, to "AF/MF Control Hold". This is the closest thing I could find to the FOCUS PUSH AUTO button of FS7. I would strongly recommend you try this at a store before making any purchase. It appears that FOCUS PUSH AUTO is a key feature for you, and I suspect that A7RII may not operate in a way that suits your style".

OK, so I tried the above approach but Push AF doesn't work 9 out of 10 times! Exactly as on my FS7 camera :( So, I switched my unit to Green Mode (in spite of your recommendation above), and now Push AF works 9/10, almost perfectly, with my A7Rii. However, I noticed a very strange thing with Auto Iris:

- While on my FS7, Auto Iris doesn’t work at all in Green mode (even One Push AI doesn’t) – on the A7Rii it’s still active! Is this expected, and should it work flawlessly?
- Auto Iris in Green mode on A7Rii acts strange, though: sometimes it will set an “upper F-number limit” (and only close down to F5.6, but opens freely to F2.8 which is the larger aperture of my lens on SB), while at other times it will set a “lower F-number limit” and only open up to F4.0 but can close freely up to e.g. F11.

I must also add this Auto Iris “capping” is very inconsistent. For instance, I switched the ISO from 800 to Auto – and the Auto Iris started operating properly, changing without any limits within the lens range of F2.8 to F16. However – after turning the A7Rii off and on again – the upper limit returned, and even pointing the camera towards bright sky it will never close down further than F5.6 :( The Push Auto Focus operates well in Green mode though.

When I switch to Advanced mode, the Auto Iris is always fully functional – but Push AF never finds the focus. So on both my cameras (FS7 and now A7Rii) I don’t have a single Metabones adapter setting which would give me reliable Push AF and Auto Iris… Does anyone have similar experience, or is my unit broken? Please comment if this behavior is normal. Thank you,

Piotr

That's actually a very useful post. Did you ever solve your issue? Did you manage to get PDAF on video mode? I might be mistaken but I think that the sigma adapter DOES support PDAF on video mode (not all lenses though...as it would be expected)

No, I never solved the issue - other than getting a verdict from Metabones that my adapter must be faulty. Somehow I don't believe it...
