Hi all,

Last week we shot a wedding and made a short movie of the day, with the GH3. Collegae did the B-cam roll on a 5D. (spot the 5D shots, lol :) )

Lots of slow-mo going on in the beginning, but works well I think. I'm really happy with the results and how the camera held up in pretty extreme lighting conditions. Luckily no real dark interiors.

I hope to get some opinions, as I just started out in this business and want to make progress as fast as possible :)
Thanks for watching and commenting!

Cheers.

I really love your wedding film, only at 2:54 the scene with black chain in the foreground I didn't like much, but it's just my point of view. I like your color grading, what software did you use. Please tell more about the gear you did use, type of glider, lenses and camera profile.
Good work. Gelukwens.

I think the use of slowmotion and melodramatic music doesn't play to well with a happy day as the wedding day is. I would also use the in camera sound in certain shots to give the film more life and the sense of being there.

Very nice work, on inside and outside clips.
Was that the 5D shooter shown in the clips or the photographer?
thanks for sharing,
Jeff

Stab, excuse me for cross-talking with Jim in your post without commenting on your video.

Finally watched the clip. Really nicely done. A few awkward moments (the bride seemed nervous) but great execution all round. As others have noticed perhaps the music was perhaps a little heavy handed, especially the final "thunderclap". It felt a little ominous to me. Would work well as a dramatic touch for a feature.... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Also, the lift from the ground level shot of the arrival of the CV2(?) was wobbly and a bit disconcerting, although I loved the idea.

My main question though, was the client happy? If so, then job well done.

GH3 looks great. Best of luck in your future endeavors and thanks for sharing.

Downsouth...you can see the second shooter in the low angle shot of the car. He is the older man behind the photog. You can also make out the primary shooter in the neighboring shot crouched down :)

Stab,
I really enjoyed your video. I thought the slo mo was awesome. Particularly the first shot with the champagne. I might have to use that :)
I also liked your use of the slider. Really adds to the cinematic quality. Grading was nice. Do you use Premiere? If so, CS6 has that awesome "warp stabilizer" effect to remove the motion during the shot of the groom getting out of the car. I have been producing wedding videos for over 10 years, but I'm not an expert by any means.
My favorite shot: The bride coming down the stairs. Those moments (the look on her face) are what makes video special.
My only suggestion woudl be this: Less than 1/5 of your video has reception footage. Less than a minute! For a future video, I would add a bit more reception video to balance out that ratio, even if it means staying a bit longer than the contract presents.

I'm really impressed by the GH3. Could you list here what profile and settings you used? Also, which lenses?

I think the piece had good use of slider and tripod shots but could have benefitted from a bit steadier footage of the bride and groom. When it was shot handheld you could really tell because of the camera movement. I would highly recommend using a Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 monopod. For my weddings it gets used about 60-70% of the time.

Thanks all for the replies. No worries for discussing about side stuff here :)

Some of the shots are a bit wonky, but to me only bothersome in that 1 shot where I got up from the ground when the car arrives. I used the warp-stabilizer on many shots with great results, but this one is unfixable :)
I screwed up, but hey, it's a wedding! It all went so fast. I ran from the 1st wide shot on the road to the ramp and in no time had to get up again to film the door shot. Nobody is waiting for the cameraman to get it together so it was improvising fast and get it done. All day.

Missed the focus on 1-2 shots and messed up the wonky shot on the arrival but for the rest it worked out pretty good I guess.

No shot has been done handheld, almost everything was shot with the (in)famous Fig Rig. I love the device. Handy for all angles.

About the music in the beginning... Yea, kinda thought it would be too 'heavy' for some people. It's a risk I took, but I think kinda builds the tension well. It gives the piece a cinematic feel, which is what I'm aiming at. It might have been slightly too much, but it also makes it more unique I feel.

The 'clients' have responded very positively and liked it a lot. Also, 1 friend who watched it today supposedly almost cried while watching it (the intro) so I'm sure there is an audience for it :)

Gear used:
- El Cheapo slider
- 2 tripods (dunno which type actually :)
- Manfrotto Fig Rig
- 1250 halogen light

Lenses:
- Panny 20 mm F1.7
- Olympus 45mm f1.8
- Kiron Kino 28-85 F2.8-3.8

Profile: Natural, everything at -1
Editing: PP CS6

Thanks for all the comments all. Great to hear your views.

2 extra answers:

We also filmed the whole ceremony and will deliver the full 30 minutes of that seperately, so that's why in the film there is only a minute of ceremony 'highlights'.

Also, NOBODY is using/stealing my champagne shot at the beginning without my permission, which can be bought for $250!

LOL...good one. I should clarify: by "use" I mean...I may "borrow" the idea and film my own version :)

There is something wrong with your computer system. if memory serves this is the third video you cannot see.

Embedded videos do not show for me. (I wish I knew why.)

I have no issues with the clips on the Vimeo site. But this one wouldn't load yesterday. Possibly a Vimeo network issue, as it seems to work now.

Footage looks Great!

Didn't like the pacing of the edit or Music though, way to slow and dragging for My liking.

Very nicely done. Everything worked for me. If I had to find constructive critism I'd have to say the only thing I found was the groom scratched his nose at one point.
How you you shoot the car on the freeway. It was so smooth. It was not hand held was it?
Good work!
