MxR SDHC with EX1-R improved performance

E-films just reported that they tested their SDHC adapters with the EX1-R camera, and got a dramatically improved performance. The MxR/Sandisk Ultra 32GB combination was able to consistently sustain 60fps! It over-cranks to the same level as the SxS. This proves that the earlier bottleneck with the EX1/3 cameras was not due to the SDHC adapters, but to interface implementation in the camera. E-films is in the process of testing various configurations as we speak, I will report more as soon as more information becomes available. The E-Films adapters are available now here at the DVXUSER shop.

It is great news even if you don't care to overcrank, it means with quality fast SDHC media you are going to be less likely to have media restoration problems in normal recoding modes.

It would be interesting to see how much faster the EX1R flushes the buffer than the EX1 (ie how much quicker does the Slot light go from red to green).

It is also interesting to note that Sony said another firmware upgrade is in store to handle the SxS-1 cards in the EX1 later this year.

I'm wishing/hoping it will give an improved performance to the EX1 handling SDHC cards just as the EX1R has been improved.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one cause SxS-1 uses the PCI Express interface and the SDHC/MS options use the internal USB interface. If there is some someway improvements to be achieved then thats great but I'd guess most of the improvements in the 1R are though improved USB hardware.

Having said that I love being wrong on such things so bring it on Sony if you can...

They were releasing it to specifically handle the SxS-1 card. I don't think they would announce it if they can't deliver it.

"Compatibility with older EX equipment is planned for early 2010."

It all depends on your workflow and budget. If you can allocate a memory chip to each adapter, you get yourself a little more safety margin (or at least you would feel this way), by not exercising the adapter/memory connector. Plug in once, make sure it works OK, and leave it there.

ok great. Also one more question. When I ingest the footage can I do it directly from the sdhc card? or must it stay inside the Mxr ?

You have three options.

a) leave the card in the camera and use a USB cable to copy files to your hard drive. Requires the right cable. Plugs in under the hand grip. Some people think it puts less wear than plugging cards in and out but can be slower, but still faster than real time.

b) Pull the MxR adapter and plug it into an Express card reader. Has a faster transfer than the USB cable, but I always worry about the tiny express cards pins. I have no idea if that is a valid concern.

c) Pull the SDHC card out of the adapter and plug it into an SDHC card reader. The SDHC card has flat contacts instead of pins.

I read of someone having problems with card recognition from plugging and unplugging SDHC cards or adapters when both slots are using adapters. It was stated that having one SxS card did not cause that problem. I haven't experimented with that situation yet.

To reply to the first post: I indeed noticed with a new SanDisk Ultra 16 GB (Ultra II is no longer in production, but the new Ultra is at least as fast as Ultra II) overcranking is not a problem at 60fps. The red light goes to green at about the same speed as with SxS (somewhere between 3 and 4 seconds). It looks like the SDHC is a 100% replacement now.
With Transend 16Gb red label I still can't get more than 48fps and it takes around 7 seconds for the red light to go to green.
So I guess the Transend is a little slower.
