Okay everyone, I've just spent the last hour searching the WHOLE INTERNET (it feels like it) to find out if the MXO2 MINI can be used to monitor footage on a MBP.

I know it can capture, and I'm assuming a capture utility would have some kind of preview; but I don't want to buy it until I know.

I even read the manual, and it doesn't show the gui for capture.

If anyone can help. You have my platonic thanks!

I have th mxo2 mini (and the hmc150) and I know that it has an hdmi out and I'm almost positive that's for connecting to an HD monitor and there is supposed to be a calibration tool for the monitor. Didn't try it myself though, so I can't say for sure. I used it mainly for capturing before I upgraded final cut.

I found this on the matrox web site concerning the mxo2 mini:

"Playback high definition and standard definition video simultaneously. Turn your HDMI screen into a professional-grade video monitor with Matrox's unique color calibration tool. "

Also, I used it within final cut pro- so yes there was a preview screen there. There is no native "mxo" capture utility as far as I'm aware of. It just utilizes the capture utility of compatible nle's

Depends on your MBP. The newest ones don't have ExpressCard slots and therefore the MXO2 mini won't work with them. Only the new 17" has the slot.

I have the santa rosa MBP 17", which I'm NOT giving up since it has a user replaceable batt. lol. I hope they figure out something with the new ones. Also at those prices, they should have quad cores by now....

Anyway, back on point,

So are you guys saying you CAN preview your live HDMI footage on your LAPTOP screen? (Not an external monitor.) I'd be using it mostly for focus, and a vague idea of noise based on my settings. Something the built in LCD, even with the expanded focus assist is bit tough with.

That said, I looked at the manual, and this thing needs to be powered by the wall, as far as I can tell, which is not too mobile. It would require kind of an exotic power rig... so would it really be worth it?

I like the idea of Prores native capture, but on the laptop it can only do 720p, and honestly, I find 720p PH nearly flawless for my purposes. 10-bit would be nice...

So with all of this, I'm thinking maybe I should just get a battery powered HD field monitor? It just would be nice to kill two birds with one stone. I always have my mbp with me when I shoot, and there's that beautiful 17" 1920 x 1200 screen right there. And then I always have the option of prores capture.

Thanks for the help, anything more you can tell me or recommendations for other equipment would be very appreciated.

Thanks again!

Another thing you might want to research is whether or not delay is an issue. I know that on Firewire for my camera there is a delay of a second or two - which may or may not be a deal-breaker for your usage. Perhaps the Mxo2 Mini doesn't suffer from this... I don't know.
