mxf footage cuts off

Hey guys,

This is kinda weird, some of my clips are ending abruptly, as if I stopped recording halfway through the scene, almost as if it looped to the next card, but I know that is not the case.

This only happened on one card worth of footage I shot, if it happened just once I would have thought it was a fluke - like I accidently stopped recording. But it happened on a few of the clips.

It's actually not a huge deal as we can cut around it, but want to make sure it doesn't happen again. I'm not sure when the mistake happened as I didn't watch the footage in camera. I didn't log the footage myself, so not really sure if that's where the problem happened.

I have found 3 clips out of the 14 on the card that I know this happened on.

Anyone ever heard of this? or have any clue what may have happened? Could this be an issue with logging? it was near the very end of the shoot and we were in a super rush, so I am guessing it was a mistake on one of our parts, but I'm just not sure what type of mistake we could have made.

Thanks.

Sounds like you have some spanned clips and the card with the rest of the footage isn't present. Examine the clips in P2 Viewer and see if they show up with purple "!" marks, that indicates a spanned clip. If so, just find the missing chunks (almost certainly on the next card) and copy them together in P2 Viewer.

Yeah that's why it is weird,

It is exactly as if the footage is spanned, but it is not. The end footage is not on the card before or after, and there are mutliple "spanned" clips on the single card.

my guess is it is some weird corruption of the footage, but I wouldn't think the clips would play at all if that was the case.

I am almost positive the problem is on our end, as I said, we were at the end of the shoot about to lose a location and working at a super fast speed. I just want to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Did you delete the card? Can you check for the missing clip again? Did you delete any clips on any cards before copying?

It doesn't sound like corruption to me. It sounds like a spanned clip that was deleted or not copied. What was your workflow (how did you copy)? You might want to re-examine your workflow - my guess is that there is an opening for problems in the way you offload and your haste to finish up revealed it.

Where are you viewing the clips? If you noticed that several clips are spammed on the same card then that means you are shooting clips which are larger than 4 GB in file size. These clips will always come in as distinct segments in programs like HD log or P2 log and if you are using programs like ray light or MXF4Mac then they will always come in as segments (in FCP) as well.
