MXF files and Final Cut 6.06

We have a client in that brought his Macbook Pro and wanted to edit some of our P2 material on his own with Final Cut 6.06, but he can't seem to import our MXF files.

Since we're an Adobe house, I'm a bit at a loss to help him since I'm not too familiar with Final Cut. If he does an basic import (like we do in Premiere), Final Cut gives an "unsupported file type" error.

Is there a certain procedure for importing MXF files on Final Cut? Is there some sort of translation tool he needs?

Thanks.

In Final Cut go to File > Log and Transfer with the P2 cards mounted and import everything through there. If you shot DVCPRO HD, it will rewrap them as QuickTime .movs (but not transcode). If you shot AVC-Intra, it will transcode everything to ProRes (standard or HQ, depending on the setting you choose in that window).

If you shot AVC-Intra, he'll also need the AVC-Intra import plugin for FCP, available from the Panasonic site here:
https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/desk/e/download.htm#quicktime

Edit: If the footage is no longer on P2 cards, the Log & Transfer window also has an "add folder" button to add P2 footage from a hard disk, but it must still have the original P2 folder structure (CONTENTS folder, etc.) for FCP to recognize it; a folder full of MXF files alone will not work.

Thanks! Does it change anything if he copied the CONTENTS folder to his hard drive? With his File and Transfer window open, the Import... is greyed-out in the File menu.

In the top left corner of the Log & Transfer window, there's a little 'Add Folder' button separate from the regular File > Import option. Use that, navigate to the folder containing the complete P2 contents, and choose that. So, the folder you choose there should contain both a CONTENTS folder and a LASTCLIP.TXT text file. Within CONTENTS is AUDIO, PROXY, VIDEO, etc.
