MXcamera's new adaptor - TechArt

Greets all.

Just received my TechArt Canon EOS EF adaptor and reporting initial findings.

It's purported to support one-shot Auto Focus as well as iris control on e-mount cameras.

I have a Metabones adaptor too.

On initial tests with the TechArt adaptor, I'm not happy.

No AF - 'cannot continue due to the condition of this lens'... that's the error report I get. Waiting to hear about how that may happen within the FS100/700. Same error with Canon EOS 17-55 f2.8, Sigma 50mm f2.8 and Tokina (EF) 11-16 2.8.

Furthermore, iris actuation stops working if you remove/replace or swap lenses. Have to power down the camera, change, power up.

So, no AF on NEX FS100/FS700 (no EA-50 to try yet), iris control is unreliable. You're better off with Metabones or MTF at this point. Not sure about refund policies either at this stage.

Thanks for the info on the TechArt adaptor. The specs looked promising but appears to have issues with the fs100/fs700. Do keep us updated on any further findings with the adaptor and also if you hear anything from the company regarding these issues.

Think of a smart adapter as a Sony LA-EA1 with a Canon mount, so every same limitation with the LA-EA1 applies. The FS700 manual states that autofocus with LA-EA1 works only in photo mode but not during movie capture, so a Canon smart adapter inherits this same limitation, regardless of who makes it.

A workaround is to switch to photo mode, autofocus, and then go back to movie capture mode and start rolling. Since autofocus always causes visible disruption in the footage, most would see real time continuous AF a nuisance instead of an aid. (Thus, no continuous AF for LA-EA1 or any smart adapters.)

In my personal opinion we could write to Sony and petition for the no-AF-in-movie-mode restriction to be lifted. If it can be done for the VG series why not the FS? Still no continuous AF but a lot fewer buttons to press to do a simple one-shot AF.

Both the LA-EA1 and the Metabones support hot lens swapping.
