Musings on Detail Level

I give up, I followed your directions to a T, but to know avail.
I tried it with Cinema Tools open & closed. Do I need to create a database??

I'm not in front of my computer right now (my editing computer), but I'm pretty sure you can do all this right inside of FCP. One of the menu options above is "remove reverse tele-cine", then simply make sure both your sequence and you clips frame rates match. In this case 1080i/60 at 24 (or 23.98).

once I get back to my computer I'll check this out.

That dosen't work so well with this footage. I tried. The batch reverse telecine also seems to have problems working out the cadence. You can reverse your 1080 clips but you need to know your cadence.

Following up on the detail level, I compared against the Sony. Looks like the Sony at +15 is about equivalent to the HVX at +7, so max = max.

However, on the short end, the Sony at +5 looks about like the HVX at -7. Whatever you do, don't take the Sony lower than +5; at 0 to +4 it's extraordinarily blurry. It looks like there's some active blurring going on (which makes no sense -- why would they build in a blur filter that drops resolution to around 300 lines?)

So for minimum detail while not being "off":
HVX: -7
Sony: 5
JVC: MIN

For maximum sharpness without being too edge-enhanced:
HVX: +7
Sony: 15
JVC: -6
