Music Video...

The band, Viva Voce, on the Minty Fresh label, was in Chicago for one day while on their tour route, and I was brought in to put something together for them on the quick.  Shot it on a DVX with the animorphic adapter and had a nice little Arri kit and some Tota fills, but other than that, it was all kind of fast and bare bones.  Have since spent the past month doing a lot of After Effects work.  If anything, it's "different."

Re: Music Video...

That was fun and you did some great AE work. A little bit choppy, but overall, I liked it. For something done on the fly, it really rocks. Maybe you can share some of your AE techniques in the AE forum because there was some sweet stuff there.

Re: Music Video...

I just showed my wife and she liked it.  Trust me, she is very hard critic.  She liked it so much she said I could get After Effect when we com back from Peru ;D

Re: Music Video...

Well glad she liked it. But be warned: once you start getting into AE, you begin to cut off the outside world, because you work so much, so she may never see you again. I've been lucky thus far - my girlfriend doesn't mind too much.

Re: Music Video...

that was cool, if I saw it on tv I'd keep watching the whole thing - which is rare for me when watching music videos - so wicked job

Re: Music Video...

That was very creative. Incredibly done, completely unpretentious and very nice to watch. The mood was very conforting. I admire after effects people. That seems such a lot of work...

Now there are two moments I don't like. When the clocks start passing, there are ones that go too slow, and especially the ones in the foreground (blurred), don't seem very beliavable. And that streak of neon glow doesn't make much sense to me. It really doesn't match the look and feel to the rest of the videos.

The same thing about the cartoon birds. They don't seem to do it for me. Maybe if they were silloweted black, I don't know, they judt don't blend, in a very bad, Roger Rabbit way...

Still, it's a piece I enjoyed a lot. Fantastic work!

Re: Music Video...

Frigging Brilliant, and much inspiration as I'm wading my way through the Trish & Chris Meyer book on AE right now. I have my girlfriend well trained. Now when we go to the movies or watch MTV, she's like .... oooh after effects right? OOOh, more after effects. :D

Re: Music Video...

that was cool, really fun stuff. Wild images. The only issue I had was the lighting. It was a little harsh on the faces. Maybe you wanted it that way? I really like what I saw..Wow I need to learn that program.

Re: Music Video...

Great work, really admire all the time put into AE.

I think for a run and gun deal I would be excited to see you really dig in with a storyboard and watch what comes of it. Just based on how creative the AE work was.

Re: Music Video...

Boot-ah-ful. I think "unpretentious" is an excellent description...because bands like this can go there in a second...but it was nice.

Don't EVER make coffee with that much water again, okay?
Also, my little brother asked me where MSN butterflies come from...now I know to tell them that they come from the freakin VV HQ...

Only criticism is that the very first BW images of the Sock guy aren't funky enough. You've managed to get your DVX footage looking like some great 16mm, but the BW just looks like desaturated video. If you add some garbage to it and blur it (it looks fine about 40 seconds later) it'll match the rest of the feel.

More power to you, bro.
PEACE.

Re: Music Video...

Thanks for the good word on it. And yeah, there definitely are some weak points. I'm rotten with lighting, so there are some harsh sections, but the DP I usually use wasn't available and the alternative was too expensive. And yeah, some of the effects-y stuff has more than a few failings. But in full, like with most of what I put together, I always have the hope that my weird ideas or "unpretentious" take on things, will help make up for some of the visual shortcomings. Heck, some of my little films that people like the most were shot in an afternoon with a little one chip camera, so it's all a matter of how you approach stuff, I suppose.

And good luck to all those who take up AE. My advice is just to not get frustrated with it early on. I tried picking it up and learning about three times before it finally stuck. But once you get into it, about fourteen million hours later, things start to click and it all becomes second nature. Once that happens, things still remain pretty tedious, but at least you're allowed to get back to being creative.

Re: Music Video...

That was really cool, great to watch. It seemed to get a little sleepy when they were making coffee, like you weren't really sure what else to do with that amount of time...but everything else was a lot of fun to watch. I especially liked the beginning sequence with the typewriter and the way the action moved between "real" space and the paper in typewriter environment.

Yes, After Effects can be hard to wrap your head around at first, but once it starts to click things just start to fall into place and you learn advanced techniques fairly quickly.

Damn good job.

Re: Music Video...

..hmm i watched this when you first posted it, and im suprised i didnt say anything then,, but anyway.. awsome job. i really liked this. looks like lot of time effort and skill went into it and its pretty cool.

Re: Music Video...

great stuff. i like that at the very moment i thought "gee, i don't know how long this typewriter effect is going to hold my interest" you changed gears and kept it interesting. i also liked the mayor of music videos guy.
i noticed in the black and white sock searching scenes there is a thin white line between the letterbox and the image. is this because of the compression? anyway, it was awesome. reminds me of a scissor sisters video i saw on itunes but better.

As much time as I spend editing and in this forum there is not much difference. Plus she works at night and that is when I do most of my work.

Re: Music Video...

Nice work sdelahoyde! I like the style of the video. I think I saw a squriel somewhere. Agian good work.

"It seemed to get a little sleepy when they were making coffee, like you weren't really sure what else to do with that amount of time...but everything else was a lot of fun to watch."

That's exactly what happened.  Plus, we spent all morning and afternoon shooting the typing and performance stuff in that bigger room, that by the time we got into the kitchen, the location was eager for us not to be there for much longer, so we had to do about twenty setups in about an hour.  So I'm surprised any of that is even remotely watchable.  Still, I think there's something funny in having an exciting opening and then doing something so mundane and dull as making coffee -- it's sort of that so-dull-it's-funny anti-humor.

And yes, there is a squirel in there. More than one.

Re: Music Video...

pretty awesome.
The clocks diddnt do anything for me, or te neon.
I really liked the forest stuff, really cool.
