Music Video

Hi Bigmajik,
First musicvideo, cool! Was it difficult to get it done? Did the artists make it easier of just the other way around?

I am not really into rap and rapvideo's, so I won't say much about the clip itself.

In my own learning proces (I am at 5% now I guess), I found this book:
Making Music Videos
Lara M. Schwartz
Watson-Guptill Publications 2007

Not a pageturner but a very informative book on the subject.

Keep going!

Jasper

actually it was a lot of fun Anomie. the artists did not mind doing the retakes and they were easy to work with.

being that this was my first music video i was expecting some honest criticism (likes, dislikes) other than it being a rap video. im not really a rap fan myself but i was hired to do this so i put up with it just for that reason.

Good to hear it was a lot of fun. I have the same experience with my atempts at musicvideos. Reason for asking was that at my first clip I started disliking most of the footage right after I viewed it the first few times (the dislike faded for most of it later on) and at my second clip I had one uncomfortable artist when the whole thing was sort of finished (and to my own satisfaction). The one with the doubts made us happy people re-edit the largest part of the clip. In the end it got better because of that, but that was a difficult moment for me and the other musician.

I'll say something more about the actual videoclip:
Some likes: use of different locations, the car.
Some dislikes: the use of most of the several effects/filters (too much for me), the poor audio quality of the dialogue at the start of the clip (could hear them but sounded distant).

It looked like it was a cold day. Because of the light and the clothing. That's neither good nor bad I think. But I mention it anyway.

I hope some of the more experienced dvxusers will hand you more usefull (pro) responses.

For your first vid I think you did a great job. I agree with Anomie in that researching is key. Read as much as you can and watch videos in the genre of what you are doing.

About 3/4 of the way into it you started playing more with camera angles which is good. Having just one plane of reference can get monotonous... don't be afraid to change it up. I like your scene edits although some could be a tad bit longer but the overall timing is good. You really need to color correct it and I would cut back some footage in the beginning. The sound was poor and it really didn't serve that much of a use. I would shorten their walk into the store and even in it but that is just me.

I like that you are experimenting with your effects and trying things out. That is awesome but first things first. Watch your lighting in your indoor shoots; they were too dark. If you notice, music videos are all about light. Bask them in light. The last thing that I noticed was I like the people gathered together. Having that support is truly excellent but on the flip side, they were always bunched together into the center of the screen. I would have spread them out a little bit and made use of my screen area.

Overall, if it were my video I would be happy. Keep at it and I hope this helps.

Good Luck!

i have to agree with the poor audio quality. i only have 1 senheiser g2 lav so i was trying to capture both dialouges with the one lav.

the only light i have is a led on camera light. i`m working on getting some lights though.

i felt as though i had to keep them bunched because when i tried to spread them out they kept drifting out of frame. i did not want to do it like that but i found that it was easier to get through the shots.

i thank the both of you for your critiques and overall opinions. i will take them in consideration and try to strenthen my work in those areas in the near future.
