First time doing one of these. Will be shooting with HVX-200 @24 fps.
What would any of you suggest to use for playback? Computer played through speaker? CD deck? Or DAT? Also should I use a slate with Timecode to sync the shots in FCP?

what exactly do you mean by "playback"? do you mean the music the band will be playing to?
you can use a slate if you have one. but you can also sync to a vocal consonant or cymbal crash or something manually...

Yes the Playback music that the band will be lip syncing to

If you can shoot alternative framerates (which is a very neat effect) you can have the band play a slowed down or speeded up version of the song. Then when it returns to the playback framerate it looks like an alternative world (slow or fast), but the song is still in sync.

Done many music vids by playing a CD while the band/performer plays along. That way we can use the recording studio mix for the audio. I do four or five takes for camera angles, more if necessary. Usually slate but I find that matching up the audio waveforms and then checking sound works just as well for me especially if using multi cameras and the slate is not in both camera's shot. It's really not that complicated. The hard part is planning, lighting, shooting, flying the jib, dollying, . . . you get the idea.

Good luck.

I am exactly in this same boat right now. I am about to shoot a hip hop video in a few weeks and I am planning on using a DJ to provide playback. I had the artist make a special CD that we will use for the shoot. I told him to put his first verse on track 1, then the hook on track 2, 2nd verse on track 3 and so on till the end of the song. So the day of the shoot the person doing playback won't waste time trying to find where on the CD to start the music everytime I yell cut. We are going to shoot a few takes the whole song through and then do several takes with the song broken apart. I was wondering as well if a Slate was needed. I wasn't planning on using a timecode slate although that would be really cool! I agree with Jim, the worst part is all the planning. I have been burning the candle on both ends trying to get ready for this shoot.
