Here is a video i'm working on. Shot on a D90. Almost everything Handheld.

There are underwater scenes where i used a plastic underwater housing for DSLR's in general. It costed 50$, wich was the total budget in the end.

I would like to get some opinions on what i can aprove before making the final cut. There are some syncing problems that I am aware of.

I'm goin to make some more intresting transitions later on. Like distortions where the RGB separates.

Watch it and leave a comment please!

Looks great, Erik. Really great!

All natural lighting? Was the sky blue when you shot? I thought I saw a couple of tracking issues with the replacement sky?

Great job.

hi there!
In the pool there is a light under water.
Apart from that everything is natural, not even a reflector. Mostly becasue I was the only videomaker doing this video. The sky was a little bit of everyhting. Booth blue with clouds and all cloudy white.

Yeah the replacement skys... I'm considering skipping them. Looks kinda cheap. And I saw some tracking issues aswell on the vimeo one.

I also have a super close up shot of an eye that I think i'm gonna use to mirror the band playing in. But we'll se how that goes.

Here is a little update of what i'm planning with the video:

I don't think that grade quite works for the material. The video is kind of low key because of the music and the way you edited it. I think softer colors would work better, perhaps even more or less monochrome? Very nice images btw. Congrats.

...the grading of the sfx stills that is, the vimeo one looks pretty cool. and i actually think fire and explosions will make the video even "slower" if you know what i mean, as weird as it may sound.

Hi Mat!

Thanks for your comment!

About the grading:
The thing is that I haven't changed the grading in the SFX. But I have added an wiggling expression to change the lightning as if the fire is burning.

Here is a short clip with fire and explosions to explain what I mean.

i'm "waiting in line" for the conversion. i just thought the sfx shots were very green and blown out, just my display or how you want it?

if you are refering to the stills, I saved a frame were the flashing light from the fire were as most exposed. I'm no good at explaining. The video should be up now.

saw it. i think the green is because the sfx overlay is burning out the already slightly green midtones? i think it looks less than great. i would work to make it more orange, like the fire itself.

Ok, I agree with that.

What do you think about the intensity of the flashing? Less? Maybe I should skip the flashing completely.

wow, this is amazing, how did you achieve the look? What are you editing with?

Was the look mostly gained by editing?

Im an editing noob so i would love to hear about some of your workflow

Was the look mostly gained by editing?
editing means putting one image after another, the only "effects" that would be considered part of the editing process would be dissolves. changing the colors of the image is called color correction or color grading. it's often done in the editing software but not necessarily and rarely by the editor except for no-budget stuff. i work with most parts of the filmmaking process, from script to grading, sound and distribution, but never ever editing anymore since it drives me crazy.

thanks for the tips mat, im a one man crew for the most part, so its all up to me.

Can something like Windows Movie Maker do any color correction or color grading? Sony Vegas maybe?

Im taking a video production class this semester just to get more familiar. So far i dont mind the editing process at all, but i just cant seem to make my stuff look this good. (again most of my stuff is done inside at night, with only ikea lighting etc...)

JonE5:

The grading is done in after effects. A software that everyone who works with postproduction and effects should know about. Start learning it today!

Here are some updates on the video. I did change the fire flickering to a more redish look, wich I think looks better (thanks mat)
I also added a very red flare in the middle of the fire to make it light up more.
