I have no idea how to prepared the set (Master audio with TC) when shooting a music video. Need a clap, need a audio copy with TC generated from our soft edior ? ??? ???

Is any body know what is the best pracatice when shooting a music video, regarding the audio sync for painless futur editing ?

The final will go on DVD and TV

Our stuff:

- A good cd of the original song
- AGDVX100 (24p mode or 24p ad ?)
- Avid DV EXP. 3.5
- Vegas 4.0

Re: Music video when shooting: How to sync ?

1. make a master for the song and tc
2 the same song in mono with tc on 1 of the channels
3 cut the mono song version for pices that you wont to shoot with clicks for tempo in front and tc
4 if you running slow motions shots and want stay in sink make fast song klips ,i dont think that double speed will work but 50% will be fine ( you can do few versions of 20,30,40and 50% incresments)
4 burn the new cd that have at leasr 2 or 3 same pieses one afteranother for saving time for pb ( make at least 2 copies for sure that you have back up if something happens to your cd)
5 the tc chanel from cd to 1 of your camera chanels, the second chanel with mono audio to second chanel and your pb amplifier
(if you have money for tc slate ,you might split the tc for the slate to be on the safe side)
thats all ,the nle can read the tc from audio chanel and synchronise it with your stereo master with tc
hope it help its more easy than you think

Re: Music video when shooting: How to sync ?

It may seem crazy, but I find that some CD players sync clocks differ and also suffer from "wow & flutter," so I don't trust them anymore as a sync source.
Instead, I usually just extract the song from the CD into a 16-bit AIFF, 48Khz file and import it into FCP (or Avid in your case.)

FCP has a timecode plug-in that will render timecode in any format and print it in any size on the screen - so I put the song into a new timeline, place a countdown 10 seconds before it with beeps and the title tool, and then place the TC plugin on the first frame starting at 01:00:00:00 and it will give me Viz TC for the duration of the song.

Then I just output it via firewire to my old D-8 Handycam with a flipout LCD screen and I now have a TC SLATE! You can send one channel of audio to the DVX for a backup reference and the other to the PA system for lip-sync. Everytime you start a take, just point the DVX at the handycam as a slate and record. Pull it out before the song starts and you will have a visual TC reference.

Hi Dashwood and oleg

First, thank's you very much for your great tips ! ;)

Just a question Dashwood: I dont have an extra cam as slave and PA. So can we use an ordinary vhs player with tv ? Or better, our laptop witch have Avid 3.5 and all output (Dual display, firewire, audio) ? ???

Also, we will plan to buy a FireStore storage solution just to be on safe side on site. So I guess we will lost the DV port on the main cam ... :'( ???

Again guys, TKX

A VHS machine should work OK.   THey need to keep a steady speed when running, just be sure to use SP record mode and loop the song for the duration of a tape so you don't have to keep rewinding.
The laptop would be ideal if you can ensure it runs a steady frame rate.
