Music video - what format ?

Hi, I'm about to start the shooting of a music video in france with an AG-HPX171E. :love4:
It will be broadcasted on french tv in the first place then on Canadian and US channels.

My question #1 was what would be the best shooting mode forthis project.
I'm already going for a 720 and Pn to use the slow mo capabilities. The only thing to know is wether to use 60, 50, 25 or 24 Pn

I was more tempted to use the 24Pn.

What's your opinion ?

Question #2 would be : is it wise to use the 1080 format for the vfx shots ? Or not ?

If you're project is broadcasting in NTSC and PAL both, I would shoot it in 24 frames, and then speed it up to 25fps for PAL and use 3:2 pulldown for 59.94 NTSC (Americas/Canada/Japan).

Unfortunate artifact of this is the music has to be sped up as well to match.

This is what is typically done with 24fps films that go onto DVD in europe, the runtimes are just a litte bit shorter.

You can use this plugin to speed up the mixed music video material w/o significant loss.

I am sure there are other strategies for multi-market material, but this is one of the better ones I've seen where crazy algorithms do not have to be used to convert either between PAL to NTSC or from NTSC to PAL.

In reverse if you shoot in 25fps, you can then slow down to 23.98(24 fps) and do the 3:2 pulldown, now you'll need to slow down the audio material.

For question 2:

Do not shoot anything interlaced for VFX, all VFX software works with whole frames not field, albeit 1080-24P on the HVX is interlaced, reconverting it into true 24P without backwards compatible signal will not yield any more that 100 extra
horizontal pixels in the material based on the size of the sensor, so 720P@24 is your best bet.

However if the artist insists that the music in the video not be sped up at all, that you'll have to make two edits of your 24FPS material, one in 23.987 time-base the other with the same audio at 25 fps.

Using the same shots only @ a different frame rate.

As a calculation you get 1 extra frame per second in PAL vs. 24fps NTSC.

If your song is 00:03:00;00 long @ 24 FPS (4320 frames) you'll loose 1 frame per second of the song when you speed it up to 25fps.
So it will become 00:02:52;20 long @ 25 FPS (the same 4320 frames).

Thats 00:00:07;05 speed up of sound. With films its not that noticeable. Music is bit harder.

Optionaly you can find a way to shave off 180 frames elsewhere via two edits one in PAL one in NTSC.
