Music video: too weird?

Ok, this was semi-inspired by the Showtime series "Masters of Horror". Had a cool location so my head went to this strange place.

Get your metal on. Oh, and you might want to turn the volume down and listen to your favorite jig. I won't take it personally :-)

Thoughts?

Dude the non-performance stuff was awesome. Creepy and strange, good edits great effects. chris cunningham would be proud, that first scream totally made me think of aphex twin come to daddy video. I dunno what to suggest for the live performance part but it seemed dull and like every other amature video i see. I do think doing it all at night would have been cooler, its was kinda creepy stuff w the guy and at night it woulda been down right freaky. But the stuff in the warehouse or whatever was still just awesome!

Cool stuff... I thought it was shot beautifully, especially the narrative parts. I think if you CC the performance segments then you'll have a winner... just seems too "natural" and out of place with the mood of the song.

The music was horrendous, so I took your advice, put it on mute, then decided on some Ray Charles while watching. It was just people jumping around with the smooth voice of Ray.... wasn't the wicked juxtaposition I thought it would be.

Anyways, great work man! Looks crisp.

Although I appreciate the message I think Christian Rock is going too far. Oddly enough my grandmother loves this song. She especially loves the lead singer, thinks he's hot in a syphilitic kinda way. I personally think he sounds like some one with kidney stones and a ruptured appendix getting a rectal exam by a doctor with exceptionally large hands and curiously long finger nails.
Seriously though the band is actaully really good but the singer puts the "tard" in "unfookingbelievablyretarded."
I think if you desaturate the performance, punch up the contrast and push it a little warm...oh and hack the lead singer into pieces so small that there is absolutely no possible way for him to survive, you've got a winner!:nads:

well done technically speaking, camerawork, editing......

but that has got to be the worse music(?) I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing. The very definition of noise pollution.

If there is a hell, this is what is playing in the elevator on the way down. So I watched it with no sound, and realized it was basicaly the same stuff re-edited over and over. So although it was shot clean and well CC and edited- it was like the music: no substance.

This music video would be improved 100% by removing the audio track. It wasn’t weird at all, just annoying. Six minutes of my life completely wasted- I don’t know how else I can put it. Its like my ears were corn-holed by a Graden Claw.

horrible. And worth every penny I paid to see it. I wish I could come up with something constructive because I dont like being this negative- but this video made me cross :( And of course my opinion along with the other complaints about the music will make more people check out the video to see just how bad it is, and that is the real travesty.

Course its just my opinion, and I know- "opinions are like a**holes bla bla bla...."

god that music blew. -- just like slipknot, dude... i dont see how anyone can think this **** is decent. but you did give us the disclaimer, so it isn't your fault.

not bad, i just think it shouldve been shot at night.

I don't know what these guys smoked but I would like to try once in my life... :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

... Or maybe it's a bad idea ... :violent5:

Regarding the music and the video... Well... I didn't liked it. First of all it's not my type of music. But I have to say there are some great shots in there

Sweet. I love the emotions that metal invokes / extracts! Interestingly, I'm writing an article for a nat pub music magazine on this topic. I think I'm going to call it "Why I love metal heads". Cuz I do! Some of the most amazing musicians out there. Cutting new ground. Killer! Like modern-day Berlioz, Shoenberg, Stravinsky, etc.

Ok .. responses = great; thanks!

J5 - "come to daddy video" .. dude, that video ROCKS! Thanks for the compliment. I def see the similarities. Although Chris' work towers over anything I've done to date. The performance stuff at night? Yeah, I'm most definitely feeling that vibe. But I wanted there to be a kinda tri-reality going on: Vocals/Observer/Demon dude. By maintaining a common element through out, I think I kept that cohesive bond (the green = glue; the clothes = glue).

LLoyd/Cola - Thanks bros. Actually, the performance stuff was painstakingly color corrected. I really wanted to bring out the greens without destroying the other colors. I crushed the blacks quite a bit, poped the mids, pulled out the greens and browns, gave the guys a slight tan so they didn't look too pale. And with the sun's movement through out the day, I had lots of green varients. So it was pretty challenging creating a uniform "green". De-sat, in my opinion, would weaken the vibe.

Also, you might have noticed that the color grade changes slightl;y as the video progresses. The perfomance colors (greens and browns) are much darker and flat in the beginning, and then progressively get brighter/more robust (although not by much). I hear ya on the de-sat possibilities but I wanted the organic world to mesh with the metal world (metal band in the forrest). Just like the organic world had meshed with the actual metal; (greens overtaking metal structures in the conceptual stuff). Looking for balance and some symmetry.

Edweirdo!!! Thanks brutha! I think you just gave me my next music video" Elevator decent into Hell! I love it!!! Seriously. Imagine all the people/things you would meet on the way down...hmmm.

Just a side note on the music componenets of music videos: I appreciate the need to express opinions about ones like/dislike of a musical composition, tune, etc. But remember: it's not the director's (music video dude's) composition/tune. In fact, I would argue that challenging music - like technical metal - is an even more difficult type of music to create a video around ("around" I think is a good preposition to use).

Now, if a Director selected a song to compliment a film/movie/commercial ... I think that in these cases criticism is required.

Oh, and KRICK ... don't smoke it!!! Actually these guys are all college grads and are really sharp and heavily cerebral dudes.

HIT ME BACK!

Wow, easy... I never said they were stupid. They just look intense. No offense.... :bath:

LOL! I know you didn't say they were stupid :-) But I wanted to draw a distinct line between a common "metal misconception" that aggressive musicians are burnouts. Most people (not directed at you) would probably hear the music and think: these guys are seriously messed up. When in fact, they are quite the contrary. That's all :-)

Not sure why you're getting such negative comments. I really liked the shots of the singer inside that building. I would've had his makeup less Ringling Bros. and more of a horror look. I kept thinking that cutting to some shots of the band inside that building would've been cool but maybe it didn't fit your storyline. I did think the band shots needed something more interesting. Didn't care for the song because I'm probably too old. lol I listened to hardcore metal back in the 80's but don't care for it now. Keep up the good work.

I really liked the creepiness factor of the narrative shots. I wasn't very fond of the performance in the forest, it just seemed like it didn't fit? I dunno, good job though.

I thought you did an excellent job. I watched the entire vid, and although that's not my type of music, I do understand that genre. And that singer can creech with the best of them.

Like you said though, we need to examine this music aside. That being said, I thought it was great from all angles. Could you tell me what settings you used on your DVX and what NLE you used in the end?

Again, great job. I immediately noticed what you were doing with the greens. It had that "Predator" feel to it, but it was unique due to the other parts of the location.
