Hi all,

Here's a music video I shot with my DVX100. First project I shot myself. Still learning.

Here's the link. You need the latest version of QT to watch it.

http://home.comcast.net/~william.hooper1/10-12-04_CUT_2.mov

Any pointers on shooting for better images, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Looking back now I see that I overused my ND filters in an attempt to open up the iris and get a shallower depth of field. Seemed to lose some color saturation.

Thanks everyone!
Bill

Re: Music video shot on DVX100

..the nd doesnt affect the image other than letting less light hit the ccd. it shouldnt affect saturation at all, unless it results in underexposure.  anyway. after watching this , i did like it, but the quick flippy cut stuff seemed  off try using some dissolves or less cuts to match the editing tempo to the song more. needs color correction to make it look alot better, and i think that the singer guy could try to put a little more emotion into his video song performance . he was like a  christmas elf .. one of the plastic lawn ones that ..well always has the same expression on its face ..cause its plastic.. anyway .. more emotion would be good. blah blah enough nit picking, i enjoyed the vid. it seemed like alot of locations to shoot, and fun to make.  great job. :)

Re: Music video shot on DVX100

OH GOD! Why would you do that to a guitar, you savage!?

I really liked the animation on the white board that transitions to the girl in bed -- did you do that in AE?

Some of the guitar shots are cool, but I think you may have overused him walking around with it.

The shots of the boy alone in the room are the flattest shots in the vid -- not very interesting visually and really drab color.

I did enjoy it though. ;)

Thanks guys for your feedback! I appreciate it.

<..the nd doesnt affect the image other than letting less light hit the ccd. it shouldnt affect saturation at all, unless it results in underexposure.>
Oh, okay. I think I did under expose some stuff. I haven't figured out how to hit the "sweet spot" of the dvx100 yet! Still, in comparison of my footage with the B camera guy's footage, his just had more color, and I thought it was because of the ND's I was throwing on. Maybe not.

Yeah, I did color correction, (but obviously not well!) I need to buy a good NTSC monitor.

<and i think that the singer guy could try to put a little more emotion into his video song performance . he was like a  christmas elf .. >
Okay, that's funny! I'm not gonna tell him that. ;)

Don't worry, the guitar was only 40 bucks.

As for the whiteboard animation, I shot the girl in bed first, then printed out a still for my friend to trace/draw. I scanned the drawing in, cleaned it up in photoshop, printed it out on glossy paper, put the paper in the whiteboard frame. Then shot footage of a blank whiteboard and then the whiteboard with the picture in it. I exported a pic sequence from FCP, and in photoshop I frame by frame "erased" the top layer (the drawing image, then played all the compiled frames in FCP backwards, so it looked like the image was drawn. No AE at all. (Did use AE for the shot of Steve splitting on the bed, though)

WOW! That video caught my attention and kept it through the entire video. The editing was on point. I like the small subtleties as well like the guitar guy slightly moving out of the way as the rollerblader rolled by. It looked like that wasn't shot at the same time. The drawing on the wall then matched framed it to the acutal person was also cool. I like your style of editing. There were a group of clips that you sped up that sort of felt out of place. The first group of clips went to the beat or the climax of the song but the second time you used that same effect it had no "ummph" to it. You used it again towards the end which DID have some "ummph" to it. All in all, this video was well thought out and well executed. The singer kinda reminded me of Tom Green! How did you do the effect of having him sit there and then have him get up and walk away with him still sitting there?

Re: Music video shot on DVX100

I liked it over all. They covered all the major things. I have found it mostly unecessary to use filters. I generally use a uv filter and that is it. I try to get the best quality image as possible and then do any efeects, changes and stuff in post.

It was good first effort. Better then my fisrt effort I will admit.

Re: Music video shot on DVX100

I like it, great work.

What did you use for the water shots? The housings sound awesome, but they look super-pricey. I have an underwater super8 camera that I might get round to using sometime, but the quality will probably suck ****.

Re: Music video shot on DVX100

I think your video is pretty darn good. The folks above have touched on the obvious, and it was a little repetitive here and there. You might have thrown in a couple more location/themes. I know that's easier said then done, especially with no budget (I'm guessing there) and sticking mainly to outdoor shots so that you don't have to light anything up. I think you might have gotten more mileage out of that desert shot walking down the road with the guitar propped up on the shoulder. (great shot!). Walking into the ocean was a great ending, how far did you dare to follow him in? I'm glad to know the guitar was a cheapo, you had us all worried there. I liked the song, after a few listens I think it would really stick in your head. Excellent first effort.

Good comment. I was trying to get across the idea that this girl was going through his mind as he walked into the water to kill himself (or at least figuratively!) It kind of worked, kind of didn’t. It still builds well to a finish I think, but doesn’t come across that it’s going through his mind. Anyone know a better way to get across this idea (just for next time)?

Many hours of rotoscoping in After Effects. Just did a lockoff shot and had him stand up and walk out. Put 2 layers down and rotoscoped the top layer of him standing and leaving, using several mattes for each body part.

Thanks! Good call on taking it easy with the filters. I’ve been doing a bunch of reading on this forum about getting a better image. I was so worried I’d overexpose and I also wanted a shallow DOF so I went a little nuts with the ND filter and closing the iris. Lesson learned.

I rented a camera housing with a camera (it was a VX1000) for $135 for the weekend. You can tell that the footage looks a little more ‘video’ than everything else. I’m guessing it wasn’t cheap to buy. That thing was solid as a rock. I rented it in LA from ABSea photo : http://absea.net/ We were shooting at sunset and it was so hard to hold it still – the waves kept knocking me over! It was so much fun. We even saw dolphins.

Thanks a lot!! More locations?? Oh god. We were all over LA for 4 days. I actually didn’t use all the locations we shot in the video. Maybe BETTER locations – or a better variety. Looking back now, I realize that since I didn’t plan all the locations enough we kind of had to settle… The guitar dude went pretty far into the ocean, but I didn’t go further than chest deep.

Thanks again.

Re: Music video shot on DVX100

I thought I'd post some footage that shows the slow motion effect I used. I sped up the music in protools, then had him play back to the faster track. Then I slowed it down to 60% in Final Cut. First it's the raw footage, then the slowed down version with music. 2 different parts.

Bump-map the ocean with an image of the girl in the bed from the first bit. It would work better with a less-wavy surface, but maybe...

Re: Music video shot on DVX100

I just watched your video again. Did you use a matte effect for the scene at the park with the girl then you have the same guy walk by then fade out. I could tell the shot was a locked down. Did you edit a split screen and then feathered the edges to look seamless like one shot? I have seen this effect done in a lot of stuff but never really understood how its done to have 2 or more of the same person in the same scene at the same time.

Exactly. Locked down shot. 2 passes. Made sure on the walkby he was looking in the right place. In Final Cut, it's pretty simple. Just put down the bottom layer which has the guy and girl on the right side of the screen. Then do a matte on the top layer and feather the edges. It looked better than I expected.

As for the guy fading out, that was a little trickier. I had to keyframe the edges of the top layer matte, shrinking the matte so it looked like he disappeared.

Re: Music video shot on DVX100

Hey, Great effect! How fast exactly did you speed up the music in pro-tools in order to slow the footage back down at 60% ?
thanks

Re: Music video shot on DVX100

Awsome job... I loved the song and video... some of the shots at the begining were too flat... I didnt like him kneeling on the bed with her in it... All and all I loved it. I am a guitar player myself... Even at 40 bucks... I think it hurts to watch... LOL Good job!

Re: Music video shot on DVX100

bill,

cool video. and cool song.

hey, there's an extreme wide shot in there of the guy walking on a dirt road. I'm assuming this was shot in/near LA. If so, can you tell me where that road is?

thanks,
c.g.
