Music Video: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

Made this Coldplay (The Scientist) music video a few months ago, while goofing around, and forgot about it (for good reason). PLEASE EXCUSE THE WAY I LOOK (AND THE DISTURBING THEME). IT WAS VERY LATE!!!

Slowplay (8mb):

The end uses a reverse slo-mo. (Note: Couldn't lip-synch the lyrics (reversed) like the lead singer in the original video. He's good! I suck!)

Re: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

Hey PK, I've been listening to that album a lot lately, but I don't know if I'll ever think of that song the same again ;)

The reverse slow-mo was cool, and so was the B&W with orange. Which pieces were rotoscoped? The static pics that pan from left to right?

Re: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

I liked the reverse **** thing, that was bad ass. Did you use keying to take out the color? What did you use rotoscoping on? I am still a lil mystified about rotoscoping.. any clues?

thanks

Re: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

Thanks Gabe and greeches!

The stills were made in Photoshop (the toy didn't travel with me :D ).  The rotoscoping was done in After Effects. Just created 2 layers of the same video, 1 b/w (top) and 1 original (bottom). Then went frame by frame erasing the toy from the top (b/w) layer, revealing the colored version below it.  Then added a lensflare on the light. All the motions/transitions were done in Premiere Pro.

What you saw is the short version. Figured nobody would want to sit through a 5 minute orange toy slideshow and poor lip-synching. The full version has about 20 photos.

Re: Music Video: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

And "Laundry Day" makes another PK appearance! Why haven't I ordered a shirt from you yet?!

I like the reverse slo-mo at the end, but I kind of felt creepy watching the rest. :D

btw - it seemed a little jumpy too - is that just the web compression or "?"

Re: Music Video: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

Such a hearfelt video :'(

That orange was cool. I never thought of rotoscoping in after effects like that. I used to do it in photoshop, but that was a huge pain. Its amazing what kind of crazy people come up with when its late.

Re: Music Video: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

What were your settings for slo-mo?

I have always heard that 60i and a 1/120 shutter played back at 40% works well, along with 30p and 1/60 at 80%, but I have never been that pleased with what I've done that way. Your footage seemed fine, maybe I am just too critical of my own work?

Re: Music Video: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

hey pk

I really liked this nice little sentimental piece you put together. I think it would be cool if you stitched the frame borders together inside photoshop (made them blend) would be neat - but in terms of the concept, I think this is a great variation of the technique you used in the last one, hope you can combine this with other techniques to create a great MV

I think I fell in love with you too...

Re: Music Video: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

Another clip for the PK Collection  :D  I'll edit my post when it's done, oh and PK, you still have to check your messages. ;)

EDIT: Haha, very nice.

Re: Music Video: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

Hey PK,

I'm a little confused. Could you have achieved the same effect you got with rotoscoping by compositing a b&w photo with the orange guy in Photoshop?

Re: Music Video: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

Thanks everyone.

Coltrain - Sorry, I don't remember the settings. It was about 3 months ago.

Gabe - The stills were done in Photoshop. Compositing the orange toy over a b/w photo. Easy. The rotoscoping was done for all the video of me lip-synching with the toy (there was more but I cut it for this version). Difficult and time consuming. If there's an easier way please let me know.

You might be able to use a moving mask in After Effects. Set various keyframes for the mask and then let AE adjust the mask automatically. If the portion of the image you are masking changes shape or becomes obscured then you would need to do something else.

Re: Music Video: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

Hans - Still trying to learn the moving target feature in AE.

IncMedia - Thanks. Although this was just goofing around. There's alot more people could do with the reverse slow-mo effect. Walking or running around outside would have been really interesting.

Re: Music Video: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

Hey cool P.K. like the the panning/moving photos; was expecting them to stop as each one came in, but it was way better that they kept going. Was that just a simple transition?

Slo-mo looked good as well, thanks for sharing. 8)

Gotcha. I forgot about the b&w/orange video.

Re: Music Video: Rotoscope & Slo-mo Experiment

am I the only one that finds it just a little more than coincidental that someone made a slo-mo reverse video to Coldplay's The Scientist? Nobody here remembers that big afro'd kid doing this same thing months ago when he's walking around backwards, getting dressed backwards, etc? What's with this song and slo-mo reverse?
