Music Video Really Rough Cut

This is a REALLY rough cut of a music video I just shot the other day. There is no CC yet and part of the ending still needs to be shot. I figured I could put this up here so you all could tell me what you think before I make everything more final by doing fine tuning and color grading. Let me know what you think of pretty much everything and if you dont mind, give me some suggestions on what would look good color correction wise.

Everything is straight from camera except for the sideways dollying shot of the lead and the girl walking down the street, that shot i messed with a little so the colors were similar to the shot right before it.

I hope you like it and can't wait to here your suggestions.

I do know that this is not that great really, but I am still in highschool and this is my first attempt at a music video. I'm not trying to use that as an excuse, but take that into account and try not to totally bash me and my work. I do know that I need to improve and hopefully, with more practice and all of your help I can :)

For the first rough cut this was by no means bad, however I feel most of the problems lie within the footage itself. One of the most distracting things I find is when I'm watching something and whoever is on screen isn't supposed to be looking at the camera, yet they make side glances and look at the camera anyway. There were quite a few instances (not just in the performance shots) where the lead singer would glance quickly into the camera, it just makes the whole thing feel that much more amateur because it is really quite distracting.

The room that the performance shots were filmed in is cool, pity there wasn't that much more movement or enthusiasm from the performers though.
I've never shot a music clip before, but if I was still in high school and this was my first attempt, I'd know I was on the right track :)

Let us know once you've got a final cut.

Hey thanks for the feeback Cleavage. You make a good point about the band members looking at the camera. This was the first video for the band too so they weren't used to being filmed and therefore I guess tended to look at the camera. I'm not sure theres much I can do about that now except remember to talk to everyone for next time.

I would really like to hear what everyone else thinks, so if you have a few minutes pleas take a look and lemee know what you think. Thanks

As far as coloring and rough cut not bad shots need to be tighter ,need to cut down on head space with jib shots.

I think the only one should look into the camera is the lead singer try different close ups and mediums and another performance scene would be great. The only way of getting rid of them looking into camera is b-roll and shots they didn't look into camera I only seen twice.

Story line doesn't say too much, but I agree Cleavage for a first video it's a good start. Especially since your in high school.

I wish I would of started early.

Last shot is too long of guy singing into camera.

I agree with artistiam witht he length of the last shot.. Over all great job.. Keep i t up!!
How did you sync your audio?

I kinda liked the length of the last shot because I felt like it gave the whole thing a sense of closure, slowly coming to an end. Although there is another shot that will be put in there, the shot will show that the band is playing to the girl over the phone and then show her somewhat reluctantly hanging up, so that will cut down on the length of that sot a little bit.

And I synced the audio to their recorded version of the song manually in Vegas.

Anyone else take a look at this and want to comment on it, would be greatly appreciated

The first thing that struck me me was the great audio quality - I was wondering how the hell you got such good sound. Figures it was a recording, hehe.

It definately needs some CC. Some of the shots have this sick greenish hue. And I wasn't liking it. However, I really liked the vibrant colors in that cabin lodge (or whatever it was).

Is it just me, or are the short dissolves really distracting? Otherwise, it was most excellent. Can't wait for the finished product.

Okay. Upon watching it the first thing I noticed is you are seriously hampered by the guys you're working with. They just DON'T look like performers. The song is really cheezy, so I understand what kind of pain it must've been to come up w/ a decent idea for the video. I liked some of the crane shots when they were performing. Alot of times people's first videos are lighting disasters, your's doesn't seem to be that way. I couldn't get through the whole thing, but that wasn't your fault, I just didn't want one of my friends to walk in and hear that song playing

Wow thats pretty harsh, but hey thanks for the honesty. The band is also in highschool so its not like they are pros or anything, hopefully they will continue to improve and write some new songs so that I can do another better vid for them in the future, but who knows. Maybe this video can help me get the attention of other bands whom I can do work for.

I'll probably upload the final version when I'm totally done with it...thanks for all the comments, keep em coming

Well for a first video...good job.

to add to what was said the one thing that really stuck out at me was the over-use of dissolves between cuts. If it were me, I would save the dissolves and other fancy transitions to cuts between the storyline shots and the performance shots....use just straight cuts in the performance edit itself. I like the camera movement, but I think that close-ups of the singer and the other band members would add more variety to your performance segments (i.e. close-ups of guitar being played.

Overall its a good start. The lighting is pretty well, but some added cc would go a long way....and get your singer to wake up......geez

Wasn't really trying to be harsh. Just trying to say that sometimes you can do a decent job on a video (which I think you did. For your first it's pretty decent) and sometimes it doesn't matter how good a video you do because it can come across looking cheezy no matter what. Reason being the talent (or lack thereof) that you're working with. Of course these guys aren't going to sound like pros yet, it takes a few years and I understand that. With that said, I still think the worst part of the video was the how cheezy the music and high school love story was.

man, not to bash anything but here it goes

as a musician, ( although this is intended for the video and not the music ) that song was about 3 minutes too long. repetative, poppy, blah. I think the drummer should learn how to play his own song.

film wise it was nice. The soft shots and slow moving camera really added to the flavour, i would put in a little CC to get rid of the home movie look. but damn man, in the future, should anyone ever stare directly in the camera for more than one shot, slap the hell outa him!!!!!
