My friends band approached me and want me to shoot a music video for them. I'm all about this but not too sure how much I should charge them considering it will be the first time I am doing a music video. Anyone have an idea of how much I should charge them?
Hey there, first thing you need to do is come up with a budget encompassing all things crew, lights, food, tape stock, etc. whatever the cost take 10% of the total and added it on for you personal fee for directing. thats how pro crews do it anyway, of course it all depends upon what the band can afford.
I have never heard of 10% cost for director fees. Director Fees like many crew positions are paid on a day rate.
DO the math - If a Band has 5k to spend on a video then you make 500.00 bucks. No way I would direct a music video for 10% of cost. I was making 900.00 per day as a first AD. And that is even on the coast. That is midwest market.
If it is an indie band situation with no label involved. Just determine their budget and find the best way to give them a great video on budget that looks great and give yourself a fair wage for your time and expertise.
Before you take any money for doing a music video, I'd check yourself first. Make sure you're capable of shooting something they will like. Without any work to show, especially it being your first MV, I'd say go over that with them first. Most of us Indy guys have to shoot a bunch of free stuff before we even get our first paying gig, so sounds like you're off to a good start.
Oh and don't forget the CD/ipod & boom box/PA. Make sure they stay within time too!!!
