Music video "PROPHECY" - final edit :-)

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

Toaster,

You did the whole music video in 1 location. I felt kind of trap and bored. A good music video should of at least tell a story, not just a bunch of different angles all edited together. That's too typical of a music video, but you're the artist. You got to get more locations. I like the song though. Keep it up.

Thanks Spider ....

but please keep in mind that this is a *performance* video, not a storyline video. Not alll videos need a story. In fact, stories, IMHO, often date a video where performance pieces tend to provide a more immortalized piece.

Any comments on the technical side?

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

I really enjoyed this band.
I agree that this should be very perfromance heavy.
I wish there were a little more light in the space so that I could see these guys better.
I didn't want a storyline, but I kept feeling some really abstract Leonardo DaVincci type sketches...
I know that's weird to say...but if you could cut back and forth to some artworks or animations (minor) or something that represents the band in another way, I think we wouldn't get tired of the video.

THis is obviously "different"
It's an unusal racial mix, music style, lyric content..i think the video should be just as different.

Don't get me wrong. I liked what you've done..I felt like the close shots and the shaky cam fit very well with the song..I loved the close-ups of the mouths---this video LOOKS like a video...none of that eerie separation of space from the voice and lips..
but i think you could take it to a whole 'nother place with some crazy lo-fi graphics thrown in there..
because it's not really hip-hop rock...it's hip-hop GRUNGE...and it feels like the wife-beaters in the clip aren't borrowed from hip hop, but from the rock side...i dunno. You have a pretty solid bedrock, and I think that more could be done to make it better even deeper. As it is, it's good...
but to make it timeless, as you're hinting, it needs another layer...not a story per se, but just...a little...more....
There's nothing wrong with a performance video...but it doesn't feel suited for this group to be JUST a perf video...
peep the thread on Bob Gundu's video...it's even more "claustrophic" than yours, but it feels right for the group...these guys need more! I think they deserve it to really express who they are (or at least who they look like)

Good stuff though. Blows any of my videos out of the water...all .005 of them!
PEACE!

That’s a powerful song, Hillcity’s right, this is an unusual racial mix, music style, and lyric content that is integrated together remarkably well. Although the video is well done, this performance could be taken to the next level. Sorry, I’m not sure how, but you’re definitely on the right track.

Have you watched “Just like you” posted by Rich Lee? You might want to PM him to see if he might have any suggestions. I think Rich has the kind of artistic vision that could help you create the additional level that Hillcity mentioned.

Good job

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

well right now im not really feeling your color correction, the song on the other hand is superb and you've got decent editing, but really there has to be something to make the video kind of "stand out"

ya know?

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

hey man, that is truly a great song and a great band... i'm definitely diggin' it -- i think your cut is really good, but i think with some tweaks can be really great...

the changes i suggest would require a few minor pick-up shots, but not a lot --

at the beginning, if you could start with the building, but with no real motion, more of a serene mood -- then the band picks up its frenetic beat, and later you can cut back out to the building with the style you have now as if these guys are making the walls jump and filling the place with their energy (an idea the song definitely supports)

i'd go back and get a couple of ECU's of the light bulb flickering on and off and of the paint on the walls... i wanted to see some flickering of the bulb to the beat of the drummer maybe -- the walls had a great texture, if you could go back with something heavy like a hammer, and make it seem like the paint is coming off the walls because of the sound, it could add a few nice cut points that would underscore the performance of these guys which is absolutely dynamic...

there's a place where you cut really fast to the beat of the drummer -- but only at the end -- i think you should do that a couple of more times in the beginning and in the middle -- maybe shorter bursts -- it's nice, and it would establish it as a style instead of an aftethought --

i really wasn't digging the superimposed footage towards the end (the dissolves that made everything seem sort of drunken and all that) -- if you like it, i would try to clean it up a bit, personally i would take it out and just have shots that fit the mellower mood of the music there...

sorry for the length -- good work, keep us posted --
what's the name of the band by the way?
cheers ;)

That's it!!! Graffitti! You're a freakin genius... Get some shots of tag work! That would def. do the trick...but get nice stuff...pay someone to design it if you have to...

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

Hey thanks guys!!!

Hillcity -- great ideas.  I actually shot a graffiti documentary in Brooklyn last summer and have some amazing footage (150 artists, 20 walls).  I'll seriously consider using some of those images.

Monte -- I haven't done any color correction just yet.  This is all natural right now; cranked down the master ped to about -5 while shooting which really warmed up the skin tones.  Black will be eventually be color corrected for consistency, and gamma adjusted for a brighter web version (hence the darker "MAC version" you're viewing now).

Dromatador -- again, great suggestions.  Especially the chipping paint idea.  I'm going to experiment and try to come up with images that capture the intensity of the music ... the sonic rumbling!

BTW -- the band is "One Day Left" from NYC.  They are pretty amazing and have been drawing quite a bit of attention lately.  Which is why I really want to produce a top notch video for them.  I want the vid to help push them in a bigger/better direction.

Kind regards,
Kevin

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

Now, I'm highly critical on music, especially the worn genre of rap-rock. But I must say, I really liked it. Even the band. The whole stripped down concept is what worked. I'm so tired over the over-produced and super-hyped Limp Bizkit-type stuff. This was refreshing and exactly what this genre needs. Old skewl, no b.s. one-two punch! Awww yeah!

Sorta reminded me of Shootyz Groove meets Helmet meets a keyboard.

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

I liked the energy of the song/video (pacing, quick edits, shutter speed). It could have been lit a whole lot better. Some shots like the drummer were dark. Not sure what the exteriors of that building had to do with anything. I would have liked to have seen some sort of storyline that went along with the video which you could have cut back and forth with the band.

Just a side note, that band kind of reminded me of Limp Bizkit meets Kid Rock! The one guy with his hat on backwards and the other guy with the top hat like Kid Rock wears! LOL!

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

All i can say is that the vid had loads of energy in it def and considering it was shot in one location only, it was quite interesting to watch. Loved the editing and the jerky camera movement and shutter setting. All blended and worked nicely. I guess a lil colour correction could do to give it a more moody feeling but loved the rawness and the track is slamming even though its not my kinda thing. Peace

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

i think you need to apply some sort of visual treatment to the video...that changes over the course of the song...or maybe you creat a handfull of treatments that you can apply to different parts of the vid.

time posterizing might be cool here...like for bits of it make it 12fps. maybe introduce some fake whip pans to other shots...just something to break it up a bit and make it more visualy interesting....you have it started with the mulioverlay thing...need more of that sort of thing i think to keep people interested for the length of the song, given that its in one location too...its kinda hard to keep some people attention...anyway, good luck with it all

peace

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

Damn, I thought the one guy was DMC :) The vid is good, and I actually enjoyed the music. I can't really offer any input as I have yet to shoot a video yet, but reading through the post it sounds as if there has been some good feedback to help with breaking up the one locale shoot. good luck

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

The Video looks really good I say if you want people to say wow! shoot a 1 minute and 30 second story line and mix it in with the footage also lighting it up a bit (color correct) Also for the story line use a tripod! And I think (personal) opinion you have a mtv 2 video.

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

ok i'm getting something weird here. When I downloaded the new version, the video has no sound and is running at double speed or something. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

um forget i said anything about the no sound (hehe, power cord fell out :-[) but the video is still running at a fast speed.

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

Re: Music video "PROPHECY" - need your e

Amazing band, and the video rocks, I love the suggestion about the chipping paint, I was thinking maybe speed ramping some of the shots might be kind of cool just to change it up a bit, but otherwise this is really great work, I could see this on mtv2!
