Hola amigos.

Here's a new rocker. Only had a few hours to shoot, and even less time to pump out a final version. So this is straight up performance video.

It will *never* have any conceptual .. I know I know .. it would be awesome with some - but no-go on this one kiddos!

Cam: DVX (original)
Shut: 120/250
Equip: dolly, crane, tripod, handheld
Lights: 3 arri 600s, 2 arri 150s
Scene file: 0 across the board
Post: FCP
CC: all FCP

That's about it. As basic as it gets! Rock n Roll baby!

As always ... constructive feedback regarding the video footage/edits is always appreciated.

Rock,

I see a pretty nasty cameraman shadow just before the halfway point. It's as you swung around the lead singer...

Might want to change that clip out. Other than that, looks pretty good.

One quick question... how many take's do you think you did all together? and do you run straight through the entire song each take, or piece by piece. I'm asking because I have a band that want's a MV, but they only come in town one day at a time for shows. I told them I'd think about it... I was planning on passing on it, but I may do something simple like this one (not saying it's "simple", but you know what I mean). Just trying to find the most efficient way to go about it, if I decide to take the job.

Hey Toaster,

I think that the video is pretty fitting for the genre of music. The editing was especially good. The shacky camera, post and on set, is stimulating.

I think that the lighting is a little flat though. It seems like you are using the Arris like they are work lights. Meaning you aren't controlling them, they are just spilling everywhere.

It was a stylistic choice to have the lights in the shot, however, their incoherent placement makes it seem like a mistake rather than a choice.

I noticed one light on the background, but other than that there was little to seperate the band. I think that considering the music you could have let much much more of the frame go black and "paint" out the band members. Read: Low Key.

I liked the use of the dolly and crane to break up the hand held. What kind of dolly/crane were you working with.

Cheers,

Matt

Escozooz: Yeah dude, you are right about the lights. We literally had just a few hours to shoot. It was a slick stage in the theater district here in NYC and we had to be in and out pretty quickly (free is a double edged sword, eh?). So the "light effect" was something that just caugt my eye mid-way thru the shoot ... so I just went with it. Tweeked the shutter/iris a bit to bet a nice starburst ... and just jammed. It really grew on me. No doubt that if I could do it again, I'd do some cool light design ... maybe a really long rown of 150's all at about knee level in a huge semi-circular formation.

The dolly = I built it using kryptonic 70mm wheels and abec 7 bearings. you could take my dolly into the park and rock some serious half pipe.

The crane is a cobracrane .. I think it's like 10 feet plus a few with the height of the tripod.

RCBrown - DUDE! I kept telling myself that no one would see that ^&%#ing shadow! Gotta pull that baby out. Thanks man.

Not sure how many takes I did .. probably something like 10-12ish and just mixed it up a bit. The way I shoot all depends on how much time I have. Sucks that way.
