music video: nom de guerre - run run run

Nice work Matthias...good to see great stuff still being made with the D90. Love the close-up wide lens shots.

thanks. yeah i forgot, we used a 0.7x wide angle converter on the 24 for those, it added some barrel distortion that i like to see in wide angle footage.

Matthias did you ever finish that D90 film you did with the guy that had realistic dreams? Wouldn't mind seeing it if you ever distributed.

nice... I kept hoping it was greenscreen... you guys had to be cold. What Dolly/Jib/stediaCam set up; nice moving camera!

haha, it was actually just -5˚C and thus the warmest day so far this strange winter. :-) the camera moves were done with the amazing hague mini stabilizer. check out the behind the scenes photos on the myspace page.

Honestly, the band looks like they was shot infront of a green screen (what with the lens and aperture choices on them) so it seemed really unneccesary to bring them all out in the cold. Build a big icey stage or something. Cut aways to them.

Technically it looks good, and the camera is nice. Not sure why it's in 1:85 crop, though besides being awkward for broadcast.

Creatively, I don't really like music videos which are just the band playing on a set. I may as well see them live, or the video be them performing raw on a stage. I think music videos should be to promote an artist and tell a visual story that compliments the song. This video looked like it was trying to sell costumes.

ok, i'm not sure what you're trying to say but thanks for the feedback. it took us one hour to drive to the location and one hour back, and zero time in post, i'm not sure what a greenscreen shoot would have solved. it's in 1.85 crop because i don't like 16:9, i never use it. even 4:3 is more interesting to frame in i think. why is it awkward for broadcast? i've never had a problem.

Ah, so only 2 hours to get there and back then. That's not so bad! That would be much better than spending hours doing green screen you're right. I thought you guys had travelled really far away to a remote location and brought big discomfort to the band or something!

I just found it weird that something is 1:85 for a music video that wasn't shot on film. Really, you like 4:3 more? O_o

stockholm is an island (actually several) in the baltic sea so finding rough icy terrain in the winter isn't hard. :-)

yeah i think 4:3 is really nice actually, better yet 1.37:1. i love many films shot in that format, persona is one of the most beautifully composed films ever, and i've made several myself. you get to play with the height of the frame much more. i always found it hard to compose in 16:9, you often need to make it very tight to look, well, tight, which means you're basically doing a 4:3 frame that's cropped top and bottom. if you try a real widescreen composition there's often too much space vertically. 1.85:1 isn't that different, but it's enough to remove that empty kind of sloppy feel from the frame.

love the song !
the video is nice !
I felt the cutting was a bit fast, I wish some shots went a bit longer.
nice job on the clouds sir matt !

overall quite refreshing piece.
It is funny, when it begins, it feels very 1984ish :)

cheers.

thanks. the clouds were fun to do. i basically just sped up one of the shots that had a lot of sky and did a standard sky replacement with a combined luma/color key and garbage matte. they are tracked in for two shots, the others are just static replacements which works even if the camera is moving due to the parallax effect.
