MUSIC VIDEO Look - How to?

Hey everyone!! I'm shooting a music video next month and would love some feedback! I want to get a look similar to this..the singer in front of windows with a fog machine:

This is the location I'm considering studio3.jpg

Any idea what kind of lighting equipment I would need for a similar look, if any?

Might be shooting with a GH2 and HPX170.

Thanks so much!

Well, your location shot shows that you can use the sun to get shafts through your smoke. Alternatively, the strongest PARs you can afford, pointed in through the windows may get you there, if you need shafts. If you will only shoot contra-light with smoke as in the video, you can get away with a weaker light, as you will be blowing the windows anyway.

I guess filling with a white board (or 10) will help control the DR, I think this is only shot natural with an alexa or film..

I just did a thing where I put shafts of light through a fake stained glass window, through smoke. I used a 750 watt Fresnel and it worked out pretty good, with very subtle shafts of light. For stronger shafts I would follow cpc's advice and get some PAR lights. I would get some PAR 64s with 1K Very Narrow Spot (VNS) bulbs in them and put them out the window, warm it up with gels or WB choices, smoke the f*cker up and it should look pretty good.

You can get inexpensive PAR 64s from these guys. They have 4 of them for $89, plus 9 bucks shipping. They also sell bulbs (around $20/each).

To use the PAR 64s on stands you will need a TVMP (Television and Motion Picture) adapter. You can get one from these guys.

I would get the Avenger one. It is very nice.

This. You'll need a lot of light and a heavy duty fog machine to get those light streaks. Do some tests with what you have to see what kind of results you'll get. If they're not up to par, add more light and more smoke. : D

Shoot at night with a 5K - 10kKHMI, use a quality fogger like the rosco. Fill for the tighter shots. At that back wall there seems to be a passage beyond the windows? Another wall? Either way Id backlight that wall anyway. If you plan to use the angle you're showing get a 1.2k or thereabouts HMI to cover that area (that is if you want to simulate the look of your photo).

Remember to keep your 5k back from the window enough to give hard shadows. Too close and they'll soften too much. Throw it in the middle of those two spots if you want the clear beams with a nice feathered edge.

If you use the sun obviously you need to know exactly at what time it will be in the position you need it to be... and also you should know that at such a low angle like that it drops minute by minute quite fast. You can probably shoot a short portion of the video with that look, but not the whole thing unless you fake it by going with HMI's.

As for fill lighting you can definitely use foam core at a certain distance to give you the level you want, but if you prefer catch-light in the eyes then I would use a kino 4 bank.

Also if you really want such a dark look around the talent make sure he is in the middle of the space and quite far in front of the windows... I'd suggest 30-40 feet.
