Music Video - "Left By Time" by Time is Up

Here's my first music video, shot on the DVX and edited in Premiere, with some Magic Bullet (I posted an early rough cut a while ago). We were experimenting with urban time-lapse shots in downtown Toronto and also with using digital projectors to throw footage onto the actors (which turned out better than I'd expected, I was worried about contrast ratios - I'd like to finesse this technique and use it for other projects, maybe even some surrealist narrative stuff).

The band is called Time Is Up (check out their website ), they're a three-man electronic outfit from Murmansk, Russia. Two of the guys met as adversaries in a local radio competition, and then ended up getting together to work on this project. One of the guy's brothers also joined on, adding some really nice guitar stuff on top (in this track it comes in near the end, kind of a mix of Latin and classical guitar). They've recently released an album, "Northern Dancer," you can pick it up from their website if you like it in either CD or mp3.

Here's the link:

It's the first thing on the page. Right now there are three wmv versions (I recommend the fullscreen, of course, if you don't mind waiting! Server's pretty fast). EDIT: QUICK TIME NOW AVAILABLE

Interesting video, I have had a similar idea (projecting moving images onto a human) however, the right project hasn't come along yet.

I wish there were more timelapse, especially of the subway, as I believe that was the best part of the video in terms of aesthetics - and I loved the lapse of the tunnel, looked great.

Sure can be hard to make a video for a techno, you pulled it off pretty well

Good job

Hurry up with that Quicktime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry please hurry with Quicktime :)

I LOVED the video. The actress' facial expression pulled me in a kept me. Tugged at my heart. Great job artistically, and fairly impressed with how the lighting worked.

Great connect to the title, too. Is this your interpretation, or the band's?

good job with the video. The thing that stuck out to me was the excellent lighting, especially in the dark solo shots. Everything had a smooth professional look to it.

Dude, she looks old enough to be his MOM!!!:)
I really liked the look of this. What was that multi-colored light, projector? Really cool. Oh, BTW, what's up with the website plug at the top of the video?

Isn't that the point? The train and he left her . . . her youthful beauty has faded. She has been Left by Time.

Am I right in assuming the guy with the mustache and the kid were her family, and the train guy her mistress, er, . . . mistrer? Or was mustache incidental, and the whole young-man thing metaphorical for opportunities lost?

See you think much farther out of the box then I do:) I felt like the guy with the mustache did have some significance but I couldn't be sure.

HEY!
It's the TTC!

Awesome job, man! That's one of my favorite music videos on here. You are a terrific editor. The colors in that video were brilliant!
Man...I'd love to work on a music video with you some time. Awesome.

Thanks for the kind words guys, glad you liked it.

Multi-colored light on the characters was a mix of different time lapse footage that we'd taken (which also appears on its own). Most of the projected footage was taken with a 1/6th shutter in downtown traffic and just shaking the camera all around (it's also overlayed in the driving sequence).

Do you mean the plug for my site? Don't worry, hehe, it's not in the broadcast version :)

The second one - completely random :). It was just some coverage we had, I liked the way the kid jumped down the last few stairs, very urgent. All of that subway platform stuff was shot in slight slow motion, actually: it was all 30P slowed down to 24P (had to spit it out to an image sequence and then reimport to get it to work right).

Might as well give my DP a plug here. I made my first film with him back in High School actually, he's a good man to have around. Check him out, www.ryanmarr.com

My favorite part is in the begining when she's in front of the mirror and the lights are going with the clashes!!

You got it man, St. Andrews :)

I checked out your website, I like your stuff a lot. I'm a little busy with school right now but if anything comes up, let me know, I'd love to work with you on something.

thanks for the quicktime
cool video, really well done
i like the 'orgazm' shot at the end when the sped up tunnel shot flashes to white, nice touch... lol
yeah, and interesting that you used a mature beauty, kind of daring, in a "Bachelor" kind of way...
good stuff tho

I liked everything about it. It did test my attention span on some of the cruising shots, but it was cool, I guess it gave me some time to wonder, instead of having the whole story dished out to me. kind of thought provoking, which can be rare for music videos. I liked the female actor a lot. an interesting departure from your stock-pretty-girl-in-my-video. she was really able to stir up some reflection. great job. cool music. I'm going to check out their cd.

Whoa I really liked that, on the mac it was kinda dark and it was hard for me to see. But I loved it. If you don't mind me asking how were you able to film the subway tunnel as if the train was leaving?
