Music video - inverted colors, make up and costumes

Just released a music video for the new song called "City Boy" from the norwegian band Donkeboy.

We've been experimenting with the technical idea for the video since 2008 and we're really happy to finally make it in to a video.

So the idea was to make a video where all colors would be inverted. But we would take certain elements and characters and make them appear normal. We prefer to do things in-camera and therefor we had to use make up, costumes and lighting to get our look.

We did a lot of experimenting with inverted cinematography, first of all it's very hard for our eyes to recognize, for an example, faces, perspective, depth and so on. So we tried to limit the pictures down to a more graphical look. Flat backgrounds, simple shapes, lines and colors. We also kept the camera moving a lot to create separation between the elements of the shots and to give a sense of depth.

Also we now know that the world around us is basically made up of warm yellow, orange, brown colors. Because when you invert almost anything it ends up in shades of blue and gray. So we worked a lot on implementing colors not usually found around us both in costumes and locations.

Negative lighting was also a big challenge. To create, say, a rim light in a close up of a person, you would have to create a "rim shadow"... And to give a sense of shadow under the chin and nose, you would have to light from underneath up and overexpose. We decided to shoot as much as possible in overcast daylight to minimize shadows. And then we simply tried to light everything flat. The best shots came from overexposing a flat lit subject with no depth. So if you watch this video in natural colors, it's the ugliest video made. But it works in negative.

In addition to all this we have to tell a story with all this, so needless to say, it was a lot of work.

Our goal was never to create a polished high end music video, but to push our creative limits and make something different.

I was the photographer and shot it using the af101 with nikon lenses (12-24mm, 24-70mm, 80-200mm).

Please tell me what you guys think and hope you like it!

Thank you very much dustylense, appreciate it!

I'll try to keep up with this massive demand for more information and supplement with some BTS pictures.

I've watched this video a few times, and find it amazing that it was all done in camera. Watched the inverted-ness reversed on YouTube and thought how funny it must have been to everyone during the shoot, only to be surprised by the end result. I don't have any questions, just compliments.
