Music video I just filmed - stock dvx100b - FCP - Uprez

Aspect ratio looks like it's been stretched horizontally, like it was shot 4:3 then stretched. Colors look great.

I shot 24pa letter box and exported 1280 x 720 ....not a software uprez

when shooting letterbox what's the best to export

Better to shoot squeezed so that when you capture in DV Anamorphic your proportions are normal (widescreen look without your subjects looking short and fat.)

Another option, Cabrera, is to shoot in Normal or Letterbox (so it's natively 4:3), capture as 4:3, edit on a widescreen timeline, and put a 16:9 matte on all of your clips. If you shoot Letterbox, you're pretty much stuck with the image you shot. But if you shot Normal, you can move your 16:9 matte up or down the image to frame the clip as a widescreen image exactly how you like.

Yeah, shooting Squeeze makes it easier, and I've done it plenty, but you do lose some resolution. And if you're looking to uprez to 720 from a native 480 image, my vote is to shoot either Letterbox or Normal and apply a matte in post.

Thanks for the feedback....I am reading alot about letter box vs Squeeze

Thanks for all the info, On the next shoot i will go squeeze mode and compare

Can I just confirm this, to get the BEST possible picture when uprezzing, you should shoot in SQUEEZE mode or 4:3? Thanks.

4:3 will give you the best possible resolution to start with...but after that you ll need much more effort to do all the stretching, scaling, framing etc. in post in order to get your project done.
From the other hand if you shoot squeeze you actually do all of the above IN camera and just throw it in a widescreen timeline, export 720p with proper bitrates and you re done.

I d say...try both ways and follow the one you like....

Or even better......get the hmc 150!!!:cheesy:

To be honest it's pretty much a wash if you shoot letterbox, 4:3, or squeeze. There's fewer headaches with sqeeze though, IMO, and it does give you really good results.

Here's a trailer for a film I'm still submitting to festivals. I used a bunch of programs to give it this look, but I definitely would continue to scale my work in the future if I stay with my DVX for a while.

So that clip was not filmed in sqeeze mode ? Really love the colors and the lighting , you think a mix of dvx100 and 7d would be nice ?

Squeeze mode and then edit the piece in a 16:9 project. Just forget the letterbox mode exists. Of course, 4:3 projects intended for NTSC 4:3 would be acquired 4:3.
