GH2 Music Video (Driftwood Cluster v7 'Apocalypse Now' - 6 GOP Nebula '444')

Great looking video, did you use any noise reduction or is that straight from the GH2?

I see you finished in FCPX. Hope it worked out well for you. Once you the hang of FCPX is't quite awesome. Still has room to grow, but so far I love FCPX.

It mostly did, but I ended up having to pull out all the third-party plugins I was using because I got hit with the "green frame" bug.
Just toss the render files and re-render. Most if not ALL looks an be achieved within FCPX. Forget magic bullet looks and stuff like that. Go to FCP.co to find good plugs and what not.

A green frame?! In Sony Vegas we get red frames, which seems a bit final! Green frames sound almost benevolent :-)

Love the video - especially the shot around 3m30s looking across the lake - looked like an oil painting. Excellent.

Outstanding! Very nice work.

I a curious though... The shots of the couple dancing on a dance floor that looks like it is on a balcony or rooftop are exquisite and would seem to me to be very representative of the idyllic part of the relationship; why were they not used more in the weaving of the video's narrative?

Again... Outstanding work Gary!

Looks good gary, When she kicked him and knocked him down I was thinking it was going to be a parody or like a comedic song, but then after listening for a few I got that it most likely based on real life experiences he had with the girl he was singing about.

I think thats the first time ever seeing someone wear hose clamps as rings:)

Great job...!
Its nice to have a "story song" to produce a music video. I seem to get the , "oh baby, uh huh, hey hey hey" lyric songs... :)
Great to see the GH2 at work and glad Ive held on to mine.

More detailed comment:
Lots of people are giving you the thumbs up and a big collective slap on the back. As someone who has made countless music videos for heavy hitting international recording artists I see many things that can be improved upon in this video. Also, you stated several times some months ago in the John Travolta thread, that people here on DVXuser don't give proper feedback, so with that in mind here are some thoughts for you - I hope you take them in the good spirit they are written:

The opening shot, like your avatar shot, is a shot of an open crutch. Every Sears store photographer knows this is to be avoided. Certainly, it is not a nice way to start a video.

First cut is mid to mid. It lacks dynamism. Again, something that should be avoided. Camera moves feel arbitrary. It's not a great choice of location either.

First story set-up shot lacks authenticity - it doesn't look like the first time they met, it looks like he just nipped back to the car to get her a jacket. Grading in this scene is poor. Pay attention to your backgrounds, there are lots of distracting elements creeping into the frame in this scene and others.

Bar scene: doesn't work at all, it's clearly closed, again pay attention to your background, that great big shutter that is pulled down screams "CLOSED." Furthermore, you don't have enough extras, the extras don't look cool, the extras look self-conscious. If you can't make the scene work, find another route.

Bedroom scene. Try using some lights. Even in dark scenes, light creates shape and form. These shots just look graded down, they look flat and lifeless. The lovemaking scene should be full of life, this feels full of grunge.

After this scene the edit meanders and loses it's focus. Camera moves lack direction. I'm seeing too many backs of people heads around the lake. This is also a poor choice of location - he doesn't look like the sort of bloke who likes to feed the ducks. Wide shots look unbalanced. In the following montage the girl is filmed from too low an angle - with her shape of face it makes her look "chinny". A higher facial angle would deliver a more appealing shot. Some of the grading is off, particulaly the shot sitting in the park - green skin. The end montage lacks dynamism and the editing doesn't hit the mark. It feels rushed and lacks finesse, like you've bashed it together quickly because you were near the end.

This video needs more performance shots. It feels like scenes are being stretched out and lacks pacing, both could be solved with more performance.

The biggest issue I have is the casting - they don't look like right together. She looks like she works in a call centre and likes kittens and cream cakes. He looks like he prefers girls who wear leather... ...you'll probably tell me they are a real couple, but this isn't real life, it's rock and roll and these two aint rock and roll...

The bottom line is you've chosen the wrong road to follow. You haven't got enough production value to pull off a great video with this treatment. You've reached too far with the resources you have. Too many elements fall short. It would have been a better decision to choose a treatment with less locations and more performance.

WOW.. Harsh Liam.

Ok, you have your "critique" of the project. Lot's of what "you" thought was wrong. But a fair and just critique should also include what was done that you liked, agreed with , or a well executed shot or scene. Something? Anything???

@ Gary. Great job and I'm sure that "YOU" and the "People" that were involved in this project are completely "thrilled" with it's outcome.

So here is my list:

I'm gonna guess that the budget for the project was small. Execution factor for working with such limits. Well done!

Color was great. I felt it was true and crisp. It is well color "timed". Not just the grade, but the color timing is well done. Subtle but rich with mood.

Shots and lighting were excellent. Simple and effective.

Mood for each scene for image and look are nice. Shots support the song.

It's a small town story. It's simple. But Liam has a problem with the population of the bar? Well, first that a lot of model releases and maybe pay. OR, we can all think of the dive bar we've all been in where you and a few are the only ones in the bar? ?????? ????? ??? ?? ??? ???

Is it a perfect music video? ???? ?? ???? ?????..... Is there a perfect music video? But Gary gave image to this song and relayed the story. And I related. Job done.

But I watched it and I care not one bit for the song. Now I've watched it twice and I still think Gary did a fine job and that his clients and super happy right now. Dammit GARY! Why didn't you shoot thing on an F65?

But Liam. All is fair and good. You stated points and Gary can read them. Maybe Gary got something out it? But at least say ONE thing you liked about it......Remember, there are lots of bands out there that would like a music video much like this one.

Ok, you have your "critique" of the project. Lot's of what "you" thought was wrong.

I've just given my professional opinion. It's not meant to be harsh, they are points to consider, work on and improve. I spent years making music videos with people like The Cure, Madness, UB40, Take That, The Spice Girls and many others. I'm just sharing some insight. Others will no doubt see things differently which is fine. I didn't see the need to sugar coat anything as many of you in this thread have already done that, I'm sure Gary can take it, as I said earlier, he bemoaned the lack of good critique on this forum. I agree, and as long as we all keep it civil, good feedback is a positive thing.

Liam's critique is harsh but honest. That's a very good thing. It is far more valuable to Gary than hearing 'well done, great cinematography'. It's not only beneficial to the author but others as well. I wish more people would take their time to give such detailed critique and analysis.
