Music Video - "Blue Coma" - first time with HVX200

Hello everyone.

My brother and I just wrapped on our second ever music video - our first shooting in HD.
We used the HVX200, and captured live straight into Final Cut Pro to RAID 1 Drives.
We shot in 720p 25p.

We didn't have any P2 cards, even so this method proved to be rather efficient as we had no need to keep swapping out cards.

Our lighting package was 3 X Arri Redheads, and one KinoFlo Diva Lite 400.

We monitored on a 14" Sony Broadcast monitor in SD, using BNC cable from the camera.

Very pleased with the results with this camera - it captured the look we wanted perfectly and will be further improved when we do the final colour grade.

Here are some frame grabs (slight colour correction in After Effects):

Enjoy!

genius idea for the itouch slate! I'll have to try that.

nice grabs also, very interested in seeing the final product.

Thanks, I've heard of a few people using ipods as timecode slates, so we thought we'd take the idea a bit further.

Final edit will be done soon.

The iPod is loaded with a video file - the visuals being a timecode, the audio being the actual song.

The iPod was used as the playback device for the band to mime to - so everytime we ran the song we would get timecode displayed on the screen. Then just PVC tape it to real slate and boom, digital smart slate!

Cheers

Simon

How did you guys managed to record 720P into Finalcut?
The HVX200 doesnt have an SDI output.

Thanks for the nice comments so far everyone!

Yes we did capture over Firewire. I used a 7.5m cable with a 4.5 repeater cable.

We monitored the image by running a BNC cable from the camera to a SD Sony Broadcast Monitor, so I just taped the Firewire cable to the BNC to keep everything tidy. This arrangement is visible in the stills I've posted so far.

Obviously we are not the first to use an iPod as a slate but we like to think we made the idea a little more workable. Taping the iPod to the actual slate meant my Assistant Director could easily hold it up to the camera from anywhere and also write any additional info on the board.

Editing will commence at the end of this week.

Plenty more screenshots and behind the scenes stills on my Flickr here:

Thanks
