Music video- all GH1 & stock lens

Dude, I thought that was killer!

As for the music, I didn't understand a word he said. I typically don't care for that style of screaming type of metal, but I admit I have some CD's of that kinda thing of different sorts of metal, which I listen to when I'm tore down drunk. I'm 38...but not a total pud. ;)

As for the video, it rocked. The only critique...the horizontal flares were really annoying. Was that intentional...something with the lighting you used?? Otherwise, I seriously digged the simplicity of the video content...that's my style (except I'm not that good of an editor to pull it off in a few days...I make fuggin' wedding videos for a living). You captured the "content" of the band...and they were badazz. The editing was perfect, IMHO. Awesome. I'm going to keep drinking Bud tonight, and play it back every 30 minutes to piss off my neighbors. :D

I think the kit lens is awesome, BTW, if you're making films/videos like that, and have control over lighting. It's amazing that the GH1 comes with that lens for the price as a kit lens. It might be slow, but shallow DOF would have done NOTHING for me in watching this video. The kit lens produces perfect images throughout its crazy zoom range...which a lot not many SLR lenses can do at that cost.

Killer dude!

I've spent my holidays on this video.

All GH1, all 14-140 lens.

Great stuff - if you dont mind, I've got some quick questions:

1. how did you do that "horizontal lensflare" thingy?

2. How did you do the sound?

3. You used the stock lens - was the slowness a problem? Did you boost the image in post?

Thanks swyzl & Randy. LOL at annoying your neighbors!

The flares were intentional and were added in post. I was concerned that it may be over the top but I think it adds some excitment and 'bling' that overrides my hesitation.

I added all the sound at the start (before the guitars kick in) - it was super fun. My first time doing any sort of foley work.
The music is just ripped off their CD and placed as the audio track

Yes, the slowness was a problem. I really wanted to shoot at 60fps 1/125 but it was way to slow so I had to shoot at 1/60, and that was when I had it at 14mm. The few times I shot at longer focal lengths I REALLY wish I had a Nikon adapter so I could shoot my 17-50mm f2.8. I did have to boost a couple shots in post.

A few other possible points of interest:
I had 3x300 watt (equivalent) fluorescents that you can see along the wall. In front I had 3x200 watt equivalents out front. I needed more.
I used my brand new Glidecam 2000 pro. Some people say it takes an hour to balance this thing... it took me about 10 minutes. I dont see how it can possibly take an hour.
I used my ebay Gini rig which is pretty awesome. Pretty much like a Zacuto rig but at a quarter the cost.

Great job on the video!

Some minor sync issues with the singers lips and the audio at times but overall very nice work.

Question - How many times did they play since I assumed you captured the video from multiple angles using 1 cam to get the various shots for editing.

They probably played as a band 5 or 6 times.
I also took seperate shots of one, or a subset of them.

Never thought of that.. that's actually a great idea shooting separate musicians during multiple plays.. at that point upon editing you have an endless combination of options in how you want the final to look. nice!

This music video scared me. I ran into the closet, put a blanket over my head and cried, and asked for lordy jessuses forgiveness.

But why is the singer so angry ;)

It looked somewhere between video and film and gave it an odd look. I guess that's because you only had the kit lens which is a bit slow/dof deep and the shutter was a bit off here and there.

But it suited the song well and the flares looked nice!
