Music Video - A Vida Segue,,,

Hi,

I finished a POP-ROCK Video to be broadcasted in MTV Brazil (Video Music Brasil event), we didn't have budget (new band, etc, etc, etc).... so here is the result (please right-click, save as):

http://www.santofilme.com.br/RV/a_vida_segue.wmv

(18mb)

Everything recorded with DVX100a (except the flower, photo/chroma-key), edited in Velocity and CC/Comp/Effects in Digital Fusion.

I tried to make a Quicktime but the audio was out of sync after 1 minute of video... still trying to fix it.

Comments are welcome !

Thanks,
Ulisses Simionato

That was pretty good stuff. All these music videos being posted makes me want to have a crack at one. Didnt really look real low budget because you at least had a location of some sort. Have you done any CC to it yet? Didnt look like it to me... I may be wrong

Hi,

Thanks Coffee,
The letters flying is Digital Fusion Text+ tool, it is has an option for assign text to path, animate on path, and simulate path in 3D, rotate, etc.... mask were added for colluns and singer. Vertical camera movement was digital, original camera is static, but recorded full frame.

Thanks Hodges. The idea is the "actors" at normal speed and the world faster than them, the music says about someone stopping living, but the life continues, so singer says to come back to live.

Brian,
Thanks for the comments, it is low budget but I could use the crew I often work, some light we have in house, travelling, steady, etc... Location is a cutural center, opened for theatre groups, music, etc. All images have CC, if you want I can post some examples (before/after). Most shots were fine direct from DVX (we tweaked the camera at locations for kind of cold look), but glows, defocus and CC was added for every scene. I don´t think you must know that a CC was applied, so I liked your comment ! Anyway I didn´t have all the time I wanted for finishing, it was done in one week by myself.

Thanks guys !

Looks really good cinematography-wise. I thought it was obvious that careful attention was paid to the coloring on most shots. I like the defocus effect that you used a few times. It's a nice faux-shallow depth-of-field that really draws your eye to the right spot and gives it a pro finish.

Conceptually I wish the video was more interesting (and this comment applies to 90% of the videos I see these days). Music videos are such an open-ended medium for doing absolutely anything at all, yet so often it seems videos are following the same format: Band playing by themselves in a large & cool looking space; cut-aways to hot girl having crisis about to jump off the bridge (figuratively speaking in this case... although it's been done literally as well).

É bom ver tantos brasileiros aparecendo aqui. Infelizmente não sou muito de Rock/MPB... prefiro samba e bossa nova. Mas é difícil um conjunto de bossa nova precisar de um video pra MTV, né? Abraços. :)

Well the truth is that for most bands they don't have a lot of say in what happens in the video. It's the record label that chooses the treatment they deem fit to represent the bands song. Initially the band has some say in what they want but usually it's the label.
If you want to get signed to a film company, you need to follow the labels ideas pretty much until you get so big that they trust you'll make them marketting money no matter what you do.

The reason for the most part a lot of videos are in large cool looking spaces is because a lot of music videos are super low budget and can't afford big sets and CGI. Your average low end "film" music video runs about 30-50 grand. Not a lot of money once everybody gets paid. You get the video done and that's about it. It's a business and creativity takes a back seat. Cha-ching.

"A Vida Segue" ... English translation?

nice work ulisses. I liked your shot selection and I felt the cuts flowed well with the tune. Some nice outdoor shots at night too.

good job

good job

Hi there,

Good job,... i really liked the wideshot of the band...with sometime some of the musicien in the front.

But it too POP for me, unfortunately. Really too redundant, and what a cheezy solo by the guitarist(!)

Liked the cold atmosphere also. Keep it up !

That was great! It looked professional to me. I really like the detail you (or whoever else) put into the location of the shots. Every shot was in a cool location and made it interesting to watch. I also loved the time lapse stuff you did. How did you get the shot of the girl moving at real life with the cars behind her going quickly?

thanks skart82.

kylelewis1,
for some timelapse shots I told her to not move at all or to perform very slow movements, but in some cases it didn't worked because there was wind in the hair, etc and the speeding up was too obvious. Then I created some masks in Digital Fusion to keep her in real time while the "world" is faster. I could say it is a mask video, masks in more than 90% of the scenes (mask for effects, mask for timelapse, mask for defocus / blur and sometimes mask for CC).
I'll try to post some compositing screengrabs soon.

Thanks again,
Ulisses

Hi,

Of course it should be interesting if a history could be build in the video, but showing the band playing and some "extra" images is a good option when money isn't available.
I used the defocus/mask in all scenes, but in some of them it is stronger, all scenes were color correct as well.
Are you living in Brazil or USA ?

Thanks,
Ulisses

Excellent video. MTV broadcast quality! Only thing, i hate the graphic that flies by saying "Life goes on". I hate graphics like that....seems cheezy.

Dasonras,
I understand what you are saying about the text flying, but it was an option to help in the competition (or not :). Thanks for the comments.

Derrick,
The flower isn't stock, I spent about 4 hours with a Canon digital camera / timelapse controller getting photos with a blue background. Then selected a sequence and comp it over another photo I took from the city, plus CC, blue, etc...

Thanks !

Helicopter (robson 44 News version) with stabilized camera in the nose, recorded in Betacam SP. I was using it for a commercial video and got some images for the music video :). I could shot the city in the exactly location where I recorded the girl one week before, luck :)

Thanks,
Ulisses
