Music Vid From Taipei

Hey guys,

This is my first hack at a MV.

The band is called VARO and are on 7 inch vinyl in Taipei.

It was made a few months ago while I was living there.

It was done very quickly and without a budget. Sadly, we lost light and I was without some important pieces to tell the story.

Comments are welcome and I hope you like it.

Wow. Great cinematography. Fun "characters". This is one of the best pieces I've seen on dvxuser.

i wouldn't agree with "one of the best pieces" but really nice. How did you film the tracking shots of the bikes. Very smooth and steady.

bikefilms, Thanks for the props, I appreciate it.

Mastermind, the tracking shots were funny as hell to get. I was sitting backward on a scooter while a friend drove. I held a crazy home-made rig. (steel pipe and a small cage for the camera and a weight on the other end to balance and smooth out the movement.)

Very nice shots! -Smooth...

How did you get such a smooth twist-shot with the bike? (You know, when the picture starts out sideways and ends up upright. That was good work).

Hey guys,

LeSeulGiraffe, Besides the DVX, I used a tripod with a fluid head, a home made stabilizer (about 10 bucks worth of materials) and a 6x wide angle. Wish I had more stuff but we had no money. Even the toys were borrowed.

Adam Crabbe, the twist shot was easy. The camera was attached to a pole and counter balanced. All I had to do was twist it with my hand.
It took a few tries, and one time I almost clubbed an old lady in the head, but it was easy.

i really liked it. i think the video fit the music real well. there were some real nice shots... like the ones on the bikes. i think those were the best in the video, they seemed to capture a really cool vibe for the music, plus those gigantic handlebars are rad.

Damn! Coolness. You told a story with the camera and music that was interesting and easily followed. There was a distinct emotional melancholy at the beginning of the video that was consistently held over multiple scenes - very nice. The only thing that was slightly annoying, with my American sensibilities more than anything I imagine, were the toys. A few are cool, more than a few are tolerable, but, geez...it overtook the nice emotional qualities and storyline towards the end.

I'm impressed with what you did. Really cool.

I love whaky little videos like these. The band is cool too.
I want to go to Taiwan, looks like a beautiful place, and has some great filmmakers also.
Good job!

you don't need much just creativity and skillz,,,,,,,,,
i think you have both. Thumbs way the **** up!

wow what a great video!!! I loved the toys, it really tied everything together, loved the bikes, especially those handle bars, YEAH! These guys remind me of the Postal Service which is a good thing. Liked the film like stuff you threw in there like film tails and headers great touch. Ok i am going to stop raving and go watch that video again!!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I sometime feel like I make things in a vaccum and then they disappear. Getting feedback is wonderful and inspires me for the next/current project.

I appreciate it.

Hi Rook, I like your video, it captures your interest and holds it through out the video.
I'm just about to post my new video here - I'm using .Mac just like you - could you tell me which settings you used in quick time to get your 24.5 MB file? The quality of your picture is very good and it uploads quickly.
Thanks
Malayka

Great video. I was in taiwan last year and it brought back memories (bikes zipping by).
Do you have a picture of that rig you made? That would be cool to see. I'm sort of visualizing you sitting backwards on a moped with that rig...trying to see how you kept your balance.

Thanks!

Bally hoo, I exported from FCP to MP4 and the fast load cable option. If you eport-qt conversion MP4 and then look through the settings you'll find it all. You may want to play with compressor to get a better look. The compression you saw for my video really changed the red tones. Or if you have it Flash 8 is amazing for video-small files- beautiful video. Next time that is what I'll use.

Good luck. Post your MV soon.

Eigacio, yeah I have a couple pics. I tried to post them here but can't seem to figure out how to do it. I'll search threads to try and learn but if you know pls post here.. THX.

Hi Rook,
Thanks for the note back. Unfortunately I do not have FCP; we did the whole movie with iMovie. I don't see a MP4 option with iMovie, if you know of one I'd appreciate it. I'm going to try sending a QT file to www.archive.org and see if I can make that work posting my movie there. Otherwise I'll just go with what I've got so far - either an itsy bitsy window or a larger window with really low quality with .Mac.
I took a look at the Flash 8 website and was not able so far to locate the 30 day free trial of Flash 8. Whew! I guess I shouldn't be so picky and just go ahead and put the damn thing up, tiny as it is. Thanks for the encouragement.
By the way, holding folks attention, which your video does, is no small feat. I looked at the MV that everyone is looking at on dvxuser and got so bored and I couldn't finish watching it - great production values not withstanding.

Ballyhoo, I don't use imove so I don't know about how to export from it.

If you are anxious to get your stuff online just do what you can. You have two options- choose the one you think is best. Get the best that you can with the tools you have and go. I'm sure people will piss and moan that the window is too small and blah, blah, blah -but work with what you have. Good work has a way of rising above it's limitations.

Post what you got.

good luck.
