Mulholland Drive

Had a chance to watch this last night, I'll say this, if I can get a solid explaination or at least a few valid connections, so this story makes some sense, I'll give it a thumbs up.

It was visually stunning, I loved the feel of the film, enjoyed the dialogue, BUT I have no idea what just happened. If someone knows I'd love to hear it. If this turns out to be 'weird' for 'weirds' sake, then that's just a shortcut to filmmaking. I need closure dammit, if Lynch got strange on this with no explainations, then I think it's a cheap way out of storytelling. Thoughts?

Below is the only quasi-explanation I could find on the web, but it's not good enough...

'Okay, what was this all about? Well, it took two viewings to figure out this much: Everything that happened in the final quarter of the film, starting with the opening of the bluebox, actually happened. Diane was a burned-out actress who longed for Camilla, who left Diane for the hip director Adam. Diane did hire the hitman to kill Camilla, and the hit did happen. Diane's guilt (symbolized by the elderly couple) drove her to kill herself. After she shot herself, Diane then had a dream (which is quite odd after shooting herself) that was the first three-quarters of the film. She imagined herself as Betty (from the waitress' nametag), an aspiring actress who is beautiful and impresses directors at auditions. She also dreamt that the hit on Camilla did not go down as planned, and that Camilla suffered amnesia, relying on Diane to help her. Diane also imagined Adam as an unlucky guy, with mobsters on his back, his wife in bed with another man, and no money. Adam is also not too impressed with Camilla, or at least the dream version of Camilla. As for everything else? Well, this is a David Lynch film, and basically, any theories one has about his films remain as such, because Lynch never provides clear answers about h'is films.'

Re: Mulholland Drive

It's David Lynch... that's the only explanation I can offer. :D

Re: Mulholland Drive

The part with the cops walking outside the diner around the corner is just plain old mutha freakin scary!! What is has anything to do with the movie...

Naomi Watts and other lady lesbian scenes, can make the weirdest of movies into a great movie!

I heard that this was originally going to be a TV series. And this was also up for some Oscars I think, Lynch was up for best director for this.

Re: Mulholland Drive

i havnt seen this movie in a while...sorry cant add any thoughts...

but that thing near the trash cans ****ing creeped the hell out of me...way more so then any zombie...

Re: Mulholland Drive

I haven't seen this flick in a while. I'm going to watch it again and read that explanation.

Re: Mulholland Drive

Another great thing about this film is Lynch's foley work. It's subtle, freaky, and damn effective.

Re: Mulholland Drive

Oh man, the bum scared the crap out of me too! The dead body was also creepy.

I definitely agree about his foley work.

Isaac, I always love your avatars.

Re: Mulholland Drive

I think he is overrated.  I think his work is usually boring.  The only good thing about M Falls (and one I didn't see coming) was the scene.

I have not seen his entire body of work but the ones I have seen, I disliked, again usually due to being bored beyond tears.

Dune sucked
Blue Velvet was interesting
Wild at Heart sucked
Twin Peaks was cool (unlike anything t.v had seen at the time)
The Elephant Man was great
Lost Highway was boring

Apparently DL charges money to access his personal website?  What a ****.

I do like Sherilyn Fenn though.  Smokin hot.

Re: Mulholland Drive

Had no idea he charged for his site, that's pretty weak. I'm off to read those links, thanks guys, my ol' lady and I have been talking about the film for a couple hours now, so this should do the trick.

I loved Dune and Elephant Man, the others we're just 'there' for me. After I read these links I'll decide how I feel about MD. It's strange to say something like that, but I just have to connect a few dots to appreciate the story.

Re: Mulholland Drive

Right, it's just as scenes go, they were awesome, AS scenes, not connected together to make a film. I mean, give me the budget he had and sure, I can make a bunch of kick ass scenes that have no connection to eachother and make no sense as a whole, right? the trick is to blend the scenes together to make a solid film, last I checked. Hmm, good film to learn from I guess.

Re: Mulholland Drive

Anyone else notice that there are no chapter points on the Mulholland Drive DVD? Probably just Lynch's sick sense of humor.

Re: Mulholland Drive

I saw that hot chick scene in a class with a few lesbians. My teacher stopped it in the middle of the scene and all the lesbians cringed, "Awww, let it finish." It was awesome. :D

Right, the extras as a whole suck, unless I have a different version. There's nothing at all, just some cheap bio's of each actor, in text. Lame.

Re: Mulholland Drive

personally i loved this movie. it's easily explained if i say that the part before the blue box wasn't real. more of a way the main character wanted her life to be. and after the blue box is opened you get to see reality. and you see the people and locations she used to make up her dream world.

now watch it again :D

and off course it has things that are just david lynch. like weird cowboys, i don't know what's up with that

Re: Mulholland Drive

Useless trivia:

On the DVD to The Straight Story (don't know about you guys but G-rated David Lynch is more freaky to me than anything he's ever done ... I mean Lynch working with Disney?!? I think that's a sign of the Apocalypse) Lynch included a note in the insert that he didn't believe movies should be like books and have "chapters" therefore any DVD that he released that he could control he would not include chapter points.

Lynch has a lot of talent as a director. I just think his personal artistic directions are a little out there. Eraserhead and Blue Velvet left permanent emotional scars, so I don't think much of his movies. I do like Dune, but let's be honest, that's not a "David Lynch movie." It's a film he happend to direct.

More useless trivia: Did you know that David Lynch was orignally going to direct Return of the Jedi? He couldn't because he was in pre-production of Dune. I can't even imagine what Jedi would have looked like....

Re: Mulholland Drive

I think Jabba would have worn a Cowboy hat and we finally would have seen the Princess Leia/Aunt Beru Lesbian scene we have always wanted.
