MTV/Wire Image buys a pile of JVC HD100s--NBC unit to buy an HVX200!

[The following is an excerpt of a quasi cross-post that I just posted on the JVC HD100 forum, but this more appended post really belongs here, I think]

I just heard last night that MTV has reportedly replaced their Santa Monica offices' DVX100 inventory with JVC HD100s. Wire Image, the leading celebrity photo agency (think of them as the "AP photo" for the stars) also just replaced their Los Angeles bureau's DVX100s with three brand new JVC HD100s.

The unit of NBC I work for has been considering the purchase of some of the new 1/3" HD/HDV cameras on the market recently. First, I tested the Sony Z1U for them, and they all hated the CineFrame24 look. Unfortunately, I didn't even give the JVC HD100 a chance in the evaluation process due to the noise level I observed at DV Expo West. Although it's unfair that I chose to exclude the JVC out of hand, I was definitely trying to skew the preference for the Panasonic HVX200.

The unit of NBC I work for already has five DVX100As. After a demo by Panasonic at our offices, I helped convince our senior engineer to go with the following, at least for starters: 1. One brand new DVX100B. 2. One brand new HVX200 w/two 8GB P2 cards. I first suggested two HVX200s, but that started to sound like real money, so we settled for at least one to try it out.

You see, people are reading those tests at DV.com!:cheesy:

Sure they are. And they're also looking at the actual footage, which is why the BBC is buying HVX200's, and why Spielberg's "Munich" used the HVX200 for some pickup shots! :cheesy:

My local dealer told me about the MTV buying 25 JVCs off a dealer he knows back in the beginning of January. I'm going to show an HVX to the local Fox afiliate here.. They're big on it as they shoot DVCPRO 50 right now.. and want to continue and then migrate to HD. Sounds like the HVX could accomodate such a migration very well.

Barry do you have a link to the BBC HVX200 story. That's cool, BBC can be tough on picking cameras.

Barry, what exactly was shot for Munich. Was it Elements in front of green screen to matte in pre-exsisting shots done on film?

Or was the HVX200 full frame used?

thanks

That's coming soon, I asked for confirmation and was told that the BBC will be making an announcement. But I got the initial info from a couple of other members here on the site (like 'mmm') who attended a European trade show and talked to BBC and Panasonic UK representatives.

You'll have to ask Jarred as he's the one who shot it. It's my understanding that he will be giving us more details as soon as possible.

I understood the BBC is only looking at it, and as you know, they did that also with the DVX100 and decided to go for the Sony PD150. Now they have a bunch of Sony Z1 units. So maybe they buy some HVX this time, it is not settled yet, and before they turned the Pana down.

I know of a Spielberg film that they used a Sony Hi8 material after extensive digital work..., it says nothing. It ended up showing in the background on a tv set while the real film was shot with actors on 35mm film.

The BBC did buy a bunch of Z1s. And they told their people "do not use these to shoot high-def." They bought the Z1s to shoot 16:9 standard-def, not high-def. They're going to buy HVXs for high-def and tapeless.

The BBC is going to be using HVXs and P2 extensively during the Winter Olympics going on right now. They chose SPX800 and HVX200 P2 systems for their tapeless acquisition system, and are using it during the Olympics as its big-scale trial run.

ALL the BBC's ENG from the 2006 Winter Olympic Games is going to be tapeless P2.

BBC is broadcasting in SD. There was no need to shoot HD, that is why they use the Z1 in SD.

Panasonic is top sponsor in the The Olympic winter Games, and gives the P2 cards almost away...Panasonic will be providing P2 memory devices as well as DVCPRO HD and DVCPRO50 recording equipment to the Torino Olympic Broadcasting Organization in Italy. Not in England.

The BBC is considering the use of the HVX200. Until now they are using the Sony Z1 extensively for their programmes. Of course that will be a good move.
