.MTS Organization Tool- A Brief review of Arcsoft MediaImpression 2 Free

Being an XP user (they'll pry it from my cold dead hands), it frustrated me that .mts files would not show up as thumbnails in windows. There are reg hacks to get it to work, but I dont like messing with the registry. I just wanted a simple media management app that was free and allowed me to see all the clip info and be able to rename and move things around from within the interface. And no extra junk like PhotoDoodle Explosion Pro to bog it down.

TMPG has karma pro but like roxio, is a little bloated and costs money. VLC player is a great media player but wont let me rename files unless I navigate back to the folder it resides in. I just wanted a organizer that allowed me to preview and organize scenes quickly and that allowed me to play the clip within the app. After googling AVCHD file management, alot of junk came up but nothing solid.

I ran accross this from Arcsoft. They make alot of oem apps for cameras and optical drives. Its the free version of MediaImpression 2: http://www.arcsoft.com/en-us/software_title.asp?ProductCode=AMIL&dyContent=DOWNLOAD_TYPE_0#submenu

The pro version allows you to upload to your youtube or vimeo account and edit the video clips, but I just wanted to use it as an organizer. I will edit in Vegas or Premiere and set my own encodings. Here is a screen capture I took after I installed it.

Its not just for .mts files, all media files show up as a thumbnail, even quicktime, cineform, stills- you can even take frame grabs from the clips. It also has an import feature from your SDHC card, but you may want to stick with AVCCAM Viewer to keep the folder structure intact.

What I love about it (besides also being free) is that you don't have to import your files if they are already on your hard drive, like picasa. It browses existing clips on your disc in RT. Double click the thumbnail and a preview window opens up and you can screen the clip. You can also scale the preview to full screen. The player is hardware accellerated also, and is RT on my 2.6 Intel Quad Core 4GB ram machine.

You can organize by date, size and view metadata. You can also batch re-name clips, and it will add the numbers for you in sequence. Go from:
00234.mts
00235.mts
00236.mts
to
scene 4 int day take 1.mts
scene 4 int day take 2.mts
scene 4 int day take 3.mts

Me likes :love4:

THE CONS:
I figured there would be an annoying ad for thier pay products, and there is at the start screen. Something about ordering mugs with your kids mug on the mug. But you get to uncheck that pop-up and, there ya go- no more ads.
It will also try to install some junk- so during the install, be sure to uncheck all the extras. It's pretty lean after that. Another weird thing is that it wanted to update right after installing, why not make the most recent version the one to download first? No big deal, the updatd took 4 minutes.

The only other gripe is that after the update, it placed an "arcsoft connnect" update monitor in the system tray- next to the clock. But you can right click and disable it, so that's an easy fix. I will check for updates manually.

Its PC only. Sorry Justin Long. So if you have an HMC, (or any AVCHD camera) you might find this helpfull in wrangling up large ammounts of files after importing.

FIY: Windows 7 does not need a reg hack.

Good review, thanks!

yea, along my travels I learned W7 treated .mts files equally- but I do think W7 users might benefit from it as well. And the app is W7 compatible.

update- I tried the import from SDHC card feature and it works great, it also lets you preview the clip from the card first before importing. This way you can pick and choose if there are clips you know you will not want.
