MTS Files

Hi guys. I own a DVX100B but a friend and I shot a concert and I borrowed someone's HMC for the show. It was very 'on the fly' and I didn't have time to even check the settings on the camera, so I don't even know the resolution. I am borrowing the SD card I shot on, and I found the video files in the STREAMS part of the card.

The .mts files that are saved are said to be unix executable files. I don't have the camera now so I can't import in the log and capture part of FCP 6...

I was reading on another forum that you need to transcode the files to ProRes. What is prores and how do I convert to it? My goal is just to get it in a timeline in FCP along with the DVX DV footage. My compressor application is not submitting any batches so is there a way to do this in FCP or is there another application I can download?

Thanks

PRO RES is a codec built by Apple. When you log and transfer in Final Cut, AVCHD is automatically converted to PRO RES (because FCP cannot edit AVCHD natively).

You don't necessarily need the camera to log and transfer to PRO Res in final cut...as long as the file/folder structure hasn't been messed with on the SD card (i.e. you still have the PRIVATE folder and all its sub folders), all you need to do is point Final Cut to the SD card as the directory when you log and transfer.

The rest should be pretty easy.

However, if you did mess with the folder structure, you're going to have to transcode the mts files to another format. I use Toast, but there are other programs out there that will do the job as well.

Make sure you have FCP 6.0.5 or newer running on an Intel Mac!!! if you still have the card all you need is a card-reader... right under log and capture there's something called log and transfer! just make sure your card is inthere and you should see the footage. It's really simple just select the files you want and click the "Add to Queue" button, and let it run.

To backup the card just makes sure you grab the entire "Private" folder to your harddrive, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT delete/move any files from the sub-folders. If you do, you will learn how to transcode to ProRes in a different way =)

Alright thank you guys. I got it working good along with the DVX footage and how I will edit as a multicam project. How do you think they will mix? I matched scene settings to look the same. I am already noticing that the HMC is less grainy than the DVX but they both look fantastic.

Update: I just also tried importing using iMovie '08 and then exporting as FCP XML to FCP. When you open up the file, you can convert to ProRes right there as well... Just long render times.

Andy, the DVX scenefiles won't be the same as the HMC, they differ in the way they behave. I'm yet to use my DVX alongside my HMC so I can't even say what the settings should be between the both to get an even look. I guess shooting flat would be best and matching in post.

No I set both of them up side by side and matched thew look. The choma level was 1 up on the DVX, Detail 2 up on DVX and B Press on DVX and Cinelike_D on HMC. I transcoded the AVCHD footage to 1920x1080 ProRes 60i and the DV footage to ProRes NTSC 48kHz 60i.

yow shaun when will we see some hmc footage :D....i been not so patiently waiting :)
To be honest Darren I haven't done much with it. The weekend just gone I was able to shoot 90mins worth of stuff but it was all nature orientated. I'm working on a short wildlife piece, should be able to post in a few days!
