.mts files... how much do I need to save?

I've heard some folks saying you need to save everything in the 'private' folder or you're probably screwed somewhere down the line. Is this true? Thanks!

It depends on your workflow, but for some transcoders that is true. And there is a lot of metadata in there you might want later.

Not necassarily. But it's better safe than sorry.

Personally I offload the entire contents of the card to my PC, transcode to cineform and save that on my hard drive, then burn everything I copied off the card onto a DVD. I also keep the original files and folder structure on my hard drive until I finish that project. For every 4GB card I fill up, I burn a single-layer DVD so it works out pretty easily for archiving.
