.MTS coverter best for Adobe Premiere?

Weve shot 4 weddings with this video camera as main and 2nd body but have not touched the files since we still couldn't decide which software to purchase to convert .MTS files to AVI.

There are a good no of converters out there but I just need advise on one that is reliable in terms of quality, ease and dependability for use with Adobe Premiere...for both MAC and Windows.

Hoping to get some advise from the group...

Best!

having used the trial for cineform neohd ,my vote goes to that as the easiest/fastest converter
unfortunately its really expensive :(

I've been using the free conversion software available on Panasonic's Web site. Does an excellent job and is pretty fast, too.

I'm cheerfully editing .mts files in premiere, just treating them as a normal video file. They load with no problems - the only thing is that premiere gives you the conforming message at the bottom right - which takes a while, but once done, they can be edited as easily as if they were .avi files. The windows 7 media player plays them in real time too, although I suspect I need the proper audio codec, as in media player audio is broken up in a 'puttering' style.

The HMC40 comes with a copy of Edius Neo 2, which also has a little utility bundled with it to convert AVCHD mts files to AVI files encoded with the Canopus HQ codec. That won't work for the Mac though.

You can also use that utility to convert AVCHD to MPEG-2.

If you are just starting out at editing, I'd suggest trying to work with Edius Neo 2 first. Neo 2 is a solid, stable NLE that is very capable for basic editing. It's also likely to be easier to get the hang of than Premiere (which a lot of folks, myself included, find pretty non-intuitive to get going on). If you get the booster option (which is free, if you go through hoops with Panny), it handles AVCHD natively, on the time line, quite well too.

thanks for the heads up guys. im new to video and very excited to learn but my photography gigs really kill almost all my time hence i have to rely on a videographer/ editor to do it for me.

il try CS4 first then use the software available on the Panasonic site if i can figure it out.

Neo 2 unfortunately is bundled free for a limited time but since i purchased my in dec 09 i dont qualify for the freebie.

Thanks again!

ill post a link of the final cuts when its done...
