MTF - Nikon to PL lens adapter

i did read their web site and i saw this consideration...

(Please note. Using this adaptor will introduce a magnification factor of 1.5X with full frame lenses)

what does it means exactly...?

tnaks.

Nothing to do with the adapter. Just the ratio between F3's sensor size and full frame still lenses: when mounting 50mm (standard lens on full frame), you're getting "magnification" (or cropped) image aprox. 75mm field of view (where perspective and DOF remains the same as "normal" lens)...

But crop factor is not a real issue here. S35mm is the satandard for Cinema, not Full frame.

Correct, but MTF adapter is for Nikon STILL lenses (not cinema) and ALL "old" Nikon lenses (with F stop ring) are made for FULL FRAME. Bottom line: you need MTF Nikon adapter for still lenses, not cine lenses...

Simple explanation: take (old) Nikkor 50mm MF lens. Mount it on Nikon full frame film/digital camera. Then mount the same lens on Sony F3 with MTF adapter. The difference will be 1.5X cropping factor (with same perspective and DOF).

Now, it gets complicated when you start looking at Nikon lenses in general: all MF Nikon lenses are designed for FULL FRAME still 35mm (Leica standard). AF lenses are different bunch: you have D, DX and FX. D and FX are again full frame design where DX is for "smaller" size sensor that is almost identical to Cinema 35 (F3 sensor). DX lenses once mounted on F3 will have the same perspective, cropping etc. as when they are mounted on Nikon DX type camera. On the other hand, DX lenses mounted on FX type Nikon camera (photographic full frame) will produce vignetting as their image circle is smaller (17-55/2.8 is exception as by Nikon's specs: this lens even being DX covers full frame photographic)... Easy?

Yeah , i got it...
will happen the same crop that happens with my 7D.

i did not know that the S35 is little bit smaller tham the FF...

I have a set of nikons...

24f2.8 , 35f2 , and 85f1.8 series D , a mint vintage 50mmf1.4 nikkor-S and and a mint vintage Tokina RMC 80-200mf4

OK friends...thank you...

Its not, the 7D APS-C sensor has an ~1.6 crop factor. The S35 sensor is slightly bigger at ~1.5 crop factor.

On a 7D a 50mm becomes 80mm FOV.
On a S35 a 50mm becomes 75mm FOV.
The DOF remains the same.

A lens is a lens. Crop factor only has significance when thinking full frame terms, but when it comes to cinematography, that don't really apply. A 50mm full frame lens will have the same FOV as a 50mm Cinema lens when mounting both on a S35mm sensor.

Marco, bom encontrar outro brasileiro por aqui! Somos poucos, mas estamos presentes. Vc tá comprando uma F3?

I understand all you guys wrote.
The comparison with the 7D, was just about the crop factor.
I know the Fov does not change, because phisics of the glass rules it , not the sensor.
And i i was thinking it was all about the crop factor , i was just not 100% about this term " magnification".
But now i got it all , and i tahnk you, all camera friends for explain that so cool for me. thanks...

True when applied to the same sensor, but we weren't talking about the same size sensors, we were talking about two different sized sensors with the net result being a 5mm change in the 35mm full frame equivalent FOV. There crop factor does come into play. Its not a lot, but there is a difference.

So are you saying that my Nikkor 17-55/2.8 will still be a 17-55 on my F3 with the MFT adapter? No 1.5x magnification?

Yes, if you are comparing a Nikon still camera body with DX size sensor with your Sony F3... You will have aprox. same FOV and same DOF as well... Again, if you put this same lens on Nikon FX body (35mm Leica full frame), you will get 1.5X more in FOV than Sony F3... (this lens covers FX format by Nikon specs... Didn't try it, though).

Thanks, that's great news. I bought the F3K so I have the primes, but a 35mm prime is not a wide lens in the super 35 world. This will save me a little money until I can afford a cine-zoom. If the sony zooms come in a around $6-$7,000, as predicted, that will be competitive. Cuz after buying a SR-R1 and cards and the firmware update...I'll be broke.

There is no way to put Nikon F lens on a camera with PL mount. Well at least no way if:
1. you want the lens to reach infinity
2. you don't put glass/extender into the adapter.
Another words you will either end up with a macro only adapter or you need to sacrifice 1 stop and extend the FL 1.4(or 1.6x) the focal length in order to reach infinity.
Your choice...
That's where the magnification is coming from IMO...
