MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

Okay, so I just found out that an order I placed at EVS for MQ tapes last week has still not been fulfilled due to a shortage from Panasonic.

This blows, how can there be such a large oversight on Panasonic's part? Does anyone know if there is a technical reason why P can't keep up with the demand?

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

Thanks funny that this should come up again. I posted about this issue about 3 weeks ago because my supplier was claiming the same thing. Nobody responded or acknowledged the problem except for Rush at EVS who said he had a couple thousand units in stock. In fact, I just received an order for large MQ cassettes from them.

I don't know what's going on either but it would be nice to know what Panasonic is up to.

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

Actually I have had the same problem here in the uk. I ordered a box two weeks ago, and the guy said he will send them to me next tuesday. So I should receive them on wednesday.

I don't know, but when I made the order, they didn't have any in stock.

All the best

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

ive always used PQ tapes which i love. try em out. (panasonic for professional, they wnot hurt the heads if youve been using mq) i used mq for a while but they got too expensive (20 tapes=20 or more extra dollars than PQ, work the same for me.)

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

yeah, I use pq, tapes aswell and haven't had any problems. I stick to the one brand though

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

I bought a case of 50 last week and had no problems up here.

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

same here in germany.. made me switch to PQ once and for all . . .

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

I switched to PQs because they cost 3.90 at a store a few miles from my house. It's so convenient it's ridiculous.

The MQs seem like better quality tapes, though and while they are dry lube even panasonic used to think they were wet lube which is a bit shady. Still not great to mix with the MQs but far better than mixing Sony tapes. Oddly, nothing compares with the integrity of the old Hi8 tapes I used to record digital 8 to way back in the day. You could record over footage 100 times and it would never get corrupted.

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

yeah but the extra dollar is worth it. I had to buy 20 HDCAM tapes 2 days ago at $100 each, made me appreciate the $5 mq price tag. Plus the MQ's are white, which are cooler (seriously) than black tapes.

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

From where I ordered my MQ tapes the price difference was only GBP10. Not that much of a difference. And besides, I bought a box of 50 and the guy took GBP20 out of the total price.

So, it was worth it.

It's not good mixing MQ and PQ tapes without first using a head cleaner?

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

there shouldn't be any problem at all mixing the PQ and MQ tapes as they both come from the same tape stock.

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

Are MQ & PQ really the same? There was a post on this site about a month ago which quoted an email from a Panasonic USA rep who said that PQ's were a wet lube and MQ's were a dry lube. It would be nice to get a definitive answer on this once and for all.

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

Pq's are a dry lube tape, whatever the rep said, it seems he was mistaken. From what I understand, PQ tapes and MQ tapes are taken from the same stock, they are just different parts of the stock.

Of course I could be wrong too, but I just switched my order from EVS from 10MQ tapes to 5PQ on account that they are out and they assured me that they are basically the same tape. I figured I would try 5 pq tapes for now, and if they work well, then great for me.

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

Panasonic constantly changes their story on the MQs verus PQs. The latest, I think, is that both are made from different manufactuers and while PQs are dry (though Panasonic earlier claimed they were wet), they have a slightly different formula so they can be mixed but it's best not to mix them if you don't have to. Honestly, though, I've heard so many conflicting reports it could very well be totally different.

And yeah, MQs are worth the extra dollar (and yes, they look soooooo cool) but my local place that sells $3.90 PQs sells $7.50+ MQs. Not worth the difference, imo and I didn't want to bother with placing an order when I could go to a retail store nearby (especially now seeing as EVS is low on tape!)

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

They aren't low on tape, they are completely out. I called them today and had to change my order. That is litterally what they told me too.

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

On the Cow board Jan Crittenden of Panasonic says she is sitting on 11,000 units where she is - essentially implying there is no shortage. Gotta wonder though.

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

11000 units "where she is" doesn't do the retailers much good, though, right? ;)

Re: MQ Tape shortage hits EVS

I was told by a reliable source, a person who many of you buy tape through, that MQ and PQ come from the same tape stock. Only that MQ comes from middle of the roll. Made me think to back in the day and I was shooting with a Panasonic AG 450 SVHS. I was told the same story about the SVHS tape stock I was using. Then I hear that the new DVHS is SVHS tape from the same roll?
Is this all urban legends pertaining to tape stock or is there any truth to any of it.
