MPEG Quality

I heard if you capture straight off the camera as opposed to some JVC video deck you lose a significant ammount of resolution/quality... is this true? Is it really significant?

Where'd you hear this?

The camera and the deck, for purposes of capturing footage, behave identically. The deck has a few more desirable features for use in an editing bay scenario.

Ive seen your work, they were good. I know you have experience with the HD100, Our studio is in the decision making stage of going into HD, my question is , have you done greenscreen or bleu screen stuff with the HD100 for compositing? Would you recommend this camera?

I'd recommend it only to experienced (Varicam, HDCAM) shooters. You can get great stuff out of the camera, even with it's problems, but your shooters have to know what they're doing. Otherwise you're better off with either the Sony for 60i work, or the Panasonic or Canon for 24p work.

HDV down-converted in software to an appropriate codec such as uncompressed or DVCPRO50 is great to key with. HDV by itself at full res has all the problems of regular DV, meaning you'd want to use a tool meant for dealing with the reduced color resolution of 4:1:1 or 4:2:0 material. I have not done any green-screen work with the camera yet, FYI.

Thanks for the reply nateweaver

I have good words for the DVX, I have 2, the 100 and the A, my experience with sony in the 3ccd category is only with the vx1000. While DV cameras are theoretically bad for keying, I had an observation that confuses me, that I was able to pull good keys with the vx1000 when I captured it on my matrox digisuite LE even though it was through s-video analog capture in MJPEG than now when i'm using the dvx and supposedly all digital DV workflow in my canopus storm 2. What gives?
Using this analogy, is it possible then, to use the JVC HD100 and its HDV codec and capture in a higher codec lets say, for instance, a canopus NX for HDV, will I be able to Pull good keys using this workflow?

I would really appreciate your technical opinion on this nateweaver.

There was a thread about it 2 or 3 months ago. A guy posted a hand on a bluescreen shot with the HD-100. It's probably still available. I tested it against Primatte, Boris Red and Liquid YUV (uncompressed render) and it came out really great. Lighting, spill suppression and composite choker will may any key OK.

search the HD-100 forum specifically for chromakey.

good luck..
