Moving Projects Between Computers

The one think I don't like about editing (the way I do it now) is that I'm chained to my desk . . . so I'm looking to get a laptop to allow me to haul the project over to a coffeehouse or something, so I can get some work done and yet get out of the house.

Then, of course, I'll want to transfer it back when I come home.

I've never tried to do this before -- what are ways to do this? What's recommended?

I keep all projects on external hard drives. That way, I can just bring the drive with me and plug it into whatever computer I need to edit on. Better still, it much easier to collaborate on projects by passing around the drive.

Re: Moving Projects Between Computers

Someone just suggested that offline -- a great idea (which, of course, everyone else is thinking "well, duh!" about!).  That would take care of 90% of the problem . . .

But it wouldn't quite work if I'm on a plane, with no external power source . . . but I'll figure it out.

Thanks for the input!

Ah, yes, even while normal hard drives in external enclosures are definitely easy enough to transport, they aren't really portable.

I believe the simplest solution lies in 2.5" external hard drives. These are essentially laptop hard drives in slim external enclosures. You can power them like normal external HDs using a wall wart, but the real plus here is that they can also be powered via a USB cable; therefore, they can be powered by the laptop itself.

Speaking of which, this is basically what all of the ipod-like music players are; laptop hard drives in external enclosures. The large majority of these devices also have the ability to function as external hard drives. Perhaps even better tho is that they are self-powered, meaning you don't have to put an extra drain on your laptop battery to use them.

There are options, some more expensive than others. But I guess that's the price of portability.
