Movies every film maker should see

Re: Movies every film maker should see

I like The Abyss; great visuals. However, to me, it's like an exercise in how to make a 30-minute story three hours long.

Re: Movies every film maker should see

This stupid thread made my Amazon wish list triple in size.

Freinds and relatives! Cower at the sight of my immense wish list!

Ecoloco:
Have you seen "El ritmillo". It´s a short made by J.Fesser. I think is great. A great sense of humor. Much better that P. Tinto, and of course than Mortadelo y Filemon which i think is boring.

Another fun thing to do is watch the "baby carriage going down the steps" scene in Potemkin and then watch the same scene in DePalma's Untouchables.

Once you see the similarities, you start looking at every DePalma scene as suspect (with good reason in some cases).[/quote]

Well sure... but he of course did that very much on purpose and as an homage to that film... doesn't mean he's bad or uncreative...

Re: Movies every film maker should see

I think there's a fine line between homage to art and trading upon the work of others.

I think he's both bad and uncreative. But that's obviously a personal opinion.

The only thing that I like that he's ever done was the steadicam shot in Bonfire. Again, a personal opinion.

Re: Movies every film maker should see

El ritmillo is awesome, but after having my 4 month baby (now 14 months) go through Mortadelo without a peep and totally engrosed I have to say that the movie worked. El Milagro is a really good movie. I don't think the audiences here in the states would like it, because of the content.

Re: Movies every film maker should see

"Shaolin Soccer".

Just watched it, and every filmmaker should see it, because it will demonstrate how reliance on special effects will do little to save your movie, but genuine humor (thinking specifically about the gut-busting song 'n' dance routine "Shaolin is good, yeah yeah yeah") will never fail.

Re: Movies every film maker should see

Some unpopular movies I have to address:

- Elephant (2003) Directed by Gus Van Sant. This movie just blew me away. If you haven't heard of it, it's a simple observation of several students during one quiet day of high school, until the end, when two students commit a school shooting.

I don't know how a tasteful, school shooting movie was pulled off like this one, but I can only imagine the MESS that Hollywood would've done, (imagine a school shooting movie directed by Michael Bay:( That would be terrible -- or maybe I just hate that guy (Bad Boys 2, Pearl Harbor)).

"Elephant" remains one of my favorite movies of all time, and I'm not sure why. Maybe because of the constant Steadicam tracking shots, or the way the actual main event is handled. I haven't seen any other movie of its kind.

- The Cell (with J-LO. This movie is an artistic visual masterpiece. Again, it's a not-so-popular film.)

- Man Bites Dog (This is a French film I saw on IFC. An extremely dark comedy. It plays out like it's a documentary of a camera crew following a hit-man, however, it's not a real documentary of course.)

- Dark City (good stuff)

- KIDS (crazy, horny, 14 year old kids contracting STDs. Sounds nice, huh?)

The well-known films:
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (So much inspiration from this film, I can't get enough.)
- American Beauty (A rare modern-day classic)
- Apocalypse Now
- Full Metal Jacket
- The Godfather
- Schindler's List
- To Kill A Mockingbird
- The Silence of the Lambs
- Patton
...and hundreds more!

Also, I think all of us should watch at least 2 hours of Soap Operas per day, so we can see what NOT to do. My mommy gets mad when I make fun of her shows!!! :(:( ;)

Geez, 8 pages and no Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? Geez. The first 10 minutes of that movie gets me every time.

Re: Movies every film maker should see

That scene in the cell where he was taking out Vince Vaughn's intestines creeped me out.
