For the Ronin fans (myself included):

The reason the car scenes are so amazing is they are directed by the Master, John Frankenheimer. See Gran Prix from 1966 that set the bar so high for car scenes it's rarely been matched. Until Ronin. Yes, better than Bullitt, and yes, better than French Connection. His BMW film was a hoot as well. The Ronin DVD has a commentary you should roll AFTER seeing the movie in it's distributed format. They shot in REAL SPEED, not sped-up in post. The number of stunt drivers amazes. The tunnels through which they fly their cars is the same location as Diana's fatal crash. They used dual-controlled cars and cutaways.

Oh, yeah- he directed a few other films, like Manchurian Candidate (!)

You can add all films from Las Von Trier including :

- Breaking the waves
- Dancing in the dark
- Dogville

Those films are shot with a limit that the director set. An example : Breaking the waves are shooted with a camera on the shoulder. Etc.etc.etc....

Great great movies mentioned - but only one mention of Godfather part and 2?(let's forget about part 3). And no mention of Oldboy?

Good add Fake Name, Ronin is good and has been used as an example in one of my cinematography books. Let me try to throw my hat in the ring(of course I'll probably be mentioning others already mentioned:))
-TAXI DRIVER, a must see!
-Primer, a great film made by Shane Carruth who was an engineer who had never picked up a camera before, reads a bunch of books on all aspects of film, makes one and wins a Sundance award. Very, Very nice story line and plot. $7000 budget
-Pulp Fiction, a great film with depth and thought provoking
-PI, one of the most inspiring movies I have ever bought. Sean Gullet is a great actor. Snorri cam brought more attention to itself.
I see today's Hollywood Cinema in America as a nice break from studying the classics and innovative films that have taught us and continue to teach us everyday.

Tonight I was watching Glengarry Glen Ross (SP?)

Incredible use of dollies... Just really makes your head spin when you look at how many dolly shots there are. Plus, incredible lighting for the car scenes.

Also, actors? Hello? Baldwin, Harris, Lemmon, Spacey, Alda, & Pacino... Makes your head spin
The Alec Baldwin scene was one of my all-time favorites in film, period. $%&*ing hilarious.

Wow - a mention of Glen Garry Glen Ross with talking about the script. David Mamet is the star of that film!

I agree totally. Alec Baldwin's pep talk about Mitch and Murray from "downtown" - a true classic.
