Movie Trailers

I am shooting a short film in August. Last weekend, the lead actor came over for rehearsal. I shot everything to review later. I learned a lot from the experience. This is the first time I have ever worked with this actor and we are still trying to figure everything out.

For fun, I edited together two trailers using the rehearsal footage. I didn't have a lot of stuff to work with (the shots are all improv -- not from the final script), but I wanted to see how the footage edited together and create a look for the project. These are not true trailers in the sense that the film has not yet been shot.

What do you think?

Hey man. It looks great. How did you achieve the color isolation in the first trailer? Also your music choice is excellent. Where are you getting it? Are you making it and if so how? Thank you. Can't wait to see something complete.

Thanks! The look is a result of:

1. HVX200 in 720 24PN mode with film gamma (D I THINK)
2. The Brevis 35MM adapter (50MM LENS)
3. Final Cut Pro Color Correction (TO MAKE THE LEVELS LEGAL)
4. and Nattress Bleach Bypass plug in (cranked all the way up)

The music is Mogwai. When the film is finished, that's the type of music I want as a soundtrack. I doubt I can afford the real thing, but I will ask my composer to do something similar.

Thanks.

I shot in 16x9 mode.

The file on the web is 540 x 260 (I just took 1280 x 720 and made it a little smaller than 1/2). That's how I make most of my web files. I think that preserves the aspect ratio. Am I wrong? Does it look strange?

i like the look of both, probably the second one over the first one by a tad. however they don't really seem to give me an understanding of what is to come. all i get is that its a story about a guy with headaches which kinda gives me the vibe that the short could have the "it was all in his head" type of ending, hopefully not.

the second does give a little more depth, but without visuals its obvious there's not a real story to look forward to since its basically just a guy 'talking' about something rather than 'showing' us something. imagine how many people would've gone to see The Sixth Sense had the trailer not shown the visuals it did or if the trailer for spiderman was just a guy sitting in front of the camera talking about how he had super powers and could scale walls rather than showing us. the 'look' is there but it'd be more effective once you actually used clips from the short film. good luck, looks liek you'll have fun making it.

I liked the idea and feel behind the trailer, but I agree you could do with a small taster of tension to come. Some lovely shots, and I like his voice.

Love the use of Mogwai... have you seen 'Zidane' yet, about Zinedaine Zidane the french footballer. Scored totally by Mogwai. Fantastic stuff.

I think your aspect ratio is out.
Going by the rule of 4's:

1280 x 720
540 x ???

720 divided by 1280 multiplied by 540 = 304 (303.75)

so final size should be 540 x 304

Thanks for the comments guys. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your ideas. I can't wait to show the final film, but that will take a few months.

Thanks also for the aspect ratio info. I will try the new numbers.

Mogwai is great. I will definitely check out Zidane!

nice, how did you compress

nice, how did you compress

how did you compress it to look anamorphic like that. I can never get that right.

I exported a H264 Quicktime file out of Final Cut Pro. I made a custom size of: 540 x 260. Some of you guys really like the aspect, others have said it's wrong.

Thanks!

The Brevis is great. It's easy to use and the image is clean and sharp. I like the quick set up time and not needing rails. I don't know much about the M2.
