Movement in Panasonic Battery’s Base Plate

I have just discovered that the base plate of the Panasonic battery (less than twelve months old) has come detached from its case. I haven’t dropped it and discovered the problem when I was attaching it to the charger. There is horizontal play lengthways between the base and the case. I am concerned that electrolyte may have leaked and it could short out, so I didn’t recharge it.
Of course I am going to take it back to where I purchased it and kick up a stink but has anyone else had this problem with the Panasonic batteries or any other battery for that matter with a similar problem? I would have thought the case and the base would have been welded, fused together?
Also is the electrolyte alkaline or acidic? I.e. what should I do to neutralize the stuff from my case, my CAMERA? (I washed my hands after discovering the breakage.)

this is not to abnormal... it even happens with ours usually if you drop them.. its just the plastic joint between the 2 pieces.. the actual cells inside are sealed on thier own so you dont need to worry about them leaking.. you can just use a little crazy glue to seal up the crack again.

Thanks Jarred. I guess I was a little over cautious about leakage. Crazy glue (super glue over here) sounds like a good idea.
